Show More hese courses provide advanced training in social research skills and policy evaluation in subject areas informed by social policy concerns. Modules on quantitative and qualitative methods and policy evaluation form the core of the programme. Participants in the MSc will also take two specialist modules and a linked independent study module in which they will demonstrate the application of research skills. The specialist modules are:
- Researching Social Inequality and Exclusion; Students will acquire a range of knowledge and skills needed for full participation in the contemporary knowledge economy and in the public, private and voluntary sector labour markets. What makes the programme stand out? These courses offer opportunities for a flexible learning experience, with the aim of facilitating wider participation and more efficient use of participants' time. They enable students to access postgraduate educaton in the social sciences on a part-time, on-line mode. Who will the programme be of interest to? This suite of courses is designed to meet the needs of people locally, nationally and internationally who are interested in developing research and evaluation skills in subject areas informed by social policy concerns. This includes those employed in the public, private and voluntary sectors. This focus is reflected in the content of the specialist modules and in the independent research module. Entry RequirementsEntry requirements are normally a BA Hons or BSc Hons degree in one of the social sciences or in a cognate area including a research methods component. Compensation for cognate work experience may be made at the discretion of the University.

Show More Stratified Medicine, also known as Personalised Medicine, is at the cutting edge of a new era for medicine. Our ability to understand how genes, lifestyle and environment can influence disease promises to revolutionise healthcare practices. Stratified Medicine relies on using biomarkers (e.g. genes or protein) to stratify (or split) patients into specific groups for diagnosing or treating diseases. The ideals of Stratified Medicine will be realised with the development of technologies and systems to predict disease, select the best treatment, and reduce side effects for individual patients. This approach to streamline healthcare provides more accurate clinical decision making tools to identify ‘the right treatment, for the right person, at the right time.’ Entry RequirementsStudents will be considered for entry to the Postgraduate certicifcate, diploma or Masters course on an individual basis. The basic entry requirements are outlined below. Applicants should normally have gained: (a) I. A BSc Honours or non-Honours degree with significant bioscience (or biostatistics) from a university of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, from the Council for National Academic Awards, the National Council for Educational Awards, the Higher Education and Training Awards Council or from an institution of another country which has been recognised as being of an equivalent standard; or II. An equivalent standard in a Postgraduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Graduate Certificate or an approved alternative qualification; and (b) provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (GCSE grade C or equivalent) and evidence of competence in mathematics (GCSE grade C or equivalent). In exceptional circumstances, a portfolio of written evidence demonstrating relevant graduate qualities may be considered as an alternative entrance route.
International students Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate their proficiency in English through the achievement of an IELTS score of 6.0 with no individual band score (in the four bands of reading listening, speaking and writing) below 5.5 or a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based). Show More Systems biology aims to understand complex biological phenomena as integrated functioning systems. This level of understanding is enabled by quantitative analysis and modellingof the interactions among multiple components of a biological system. The systems approach involves concepts and tools from mathematics, statisticsand computer science which conventional life science curricula do normally not cover in depth. The aim of the PgCert/PgDip/MSc in Systems Biology programme is to equip learners with knowledge from these areas, allowing them to explore and understand biology from a systems perspective. Emerging and future science and knowledge sectors are employing computer-aided techniques to solve the increasingly complex problems in their respective areas. Students with a conceptual understanding and practical knowledge of these techniques are likely to improve their career prospects, in the life sciences and other knowledge sectors. The approach of this programme is to foster and enable systems thinking by coupling concepts of data analysis and systems modelling with concepts of computer programming – improved programming skills facilitate a deeper exploration of analysis and modelling concepts, and improved understanding of analysis and modelling concepts facilitate a deeper comprehension of algorithmic thinking and programming. One of the great advantages of computer programming is that enables active learning, as each version of a computer program essentially constitutes an executable hypothesis or inquiry. This is also consistent with the emerging field of "executable biology”. The concepts and skills acquired through this course will lead to a solid comprehension of the fundamental methodological aspects of systems biology. Emphasis will be placed on a conceptual, applied, programming-centred approach, as opposed to an intricate technical/theoretical treatment. The course is aimed at students, researchers and practitioners with a background in biology who are interested in the analytical, modelling and computational concepts underlying systems biology. The learning and teaching approach of this course is student-centred and work-based. The content will be taught through a combination of lecture material, online discussions/tutorials and independent self-directed learning, and a research project (MSc pathway). Peer support will be provided through discussion boards. Entry RequirementsStudents will be considered for entry to the PgCert/PgDip/MSc programme on an individual basis. Applicants should normally have A-level mathematics or equivalent AND have gained A relevant Honours or non-Honours degree from the UK or Republic of Ireland, OR from an institution of another country which is recognized as being of an equivalent standard, OR An equivalent standard (normally 50%) in a Graduate Certificate, a Graduate Diploma, or an approved alternative qualification in a science subject which contains a significant element of biological science. Applicants should also provide evidence of competence in written/spoken English. For UK students: GCSE grade C or equivalent. For non-UK students whose first language is not English, a TOEFL score of 550 (213 computer based), or an IELTS score of 6.0 is required. In exceptional circumstances, where an individual has significant experiential knowledge, a portfolio of written evidence demonstrating graduate qualities may be considered as an alternative entrance route. Specifically, candidates with suitable prior qualifications may be eligible for exemption from some modules, and thus be able to enter directly at the PgDip or MSc level. Other Fees |
