At the same time, tightened regimes of fiscal rectitude necessitate difficult decisions about the distribution of scarce resources for health care, and discourse has often shifted away from collective health promotion to focus on individual rights and responsibilities. For instance, the Wales Department of Health’s recent strategy document Together for Health (2011) has highlighted issues of inequality, rising patient expectations, and the need to increase health and wellbeing in the population in the face of limited staffing and funding resources. Thus, there exists a real need for greater critical understanding of the social and cultural determinants of health, ethical health care and health policy decision-making, and the complex interactions between individuals and the societies that they live in. The MA in Health, Ethics and Society will develop these understandings.

The normal minimum requirement for admission is a Bachelor’s degree, with good II.1 honours, or equivalent. However as part of an inclusive approach to learning we encourage students from non traditional entry points or without recognised educational backgrounds but who have an equivalent and appropriate professional qualification or significant relevant professional experience to apply. In such cases the programme leader may ask for a telephone/ skype conversation or request evidence in the form of a piece of work, report, analysis of some sort to satisfy themselves that each student is able to fulfil their potential on the course

one year’s relevant working experience (for graduates in medicine)

The MSc in Mental Health and Well-being of Children, Young People and Families is a new fully online programme, offering study in psychological aspects attached to psychosocial well-being and mental health promotion during development.

The programme offers the core elements of theory and research in mental health and well-being promotion in a developmental context. It fosters a critical and reflective approach to the application of these elements in a broad variety of settings including education, health, international development, and public health.

The programme will enable graduates and professionals from different professional backgrounds (such as clinical, educational, social services, public health, policy making, non-governmental organizations and international development) to:

- Develop their knowledge through engagement with research and scholarship in psychological theory and practice

- Develop skills in the critical appraisal of psychological practice in the field of child, adolescent and family mental health and well-being promotion

- Develop and consolidate an extended knowledge base of theoretical and applied approaches to mental health and well-being for children and young people

Core courses will be both conceptual and applied. At the conceptual level, the programme will review different theories of human well-being across the lifespan including psychological factors involved in the complex structure of healthy child development. At the applied level it will include a critical appraisal of the current evidence base and psychological practice, a review of the World Health Organization guidelines and the most recent approaches of mental health promotion.

Applicants for the programme will be considered on an individual basis. Guidelines for likely acceptance onto the course are possession of an undergraduate degree or equivalent (reaching SCQF level 9).

Where an applicant’s undergraduate degree does not meet the level stated above or is not obviously related to subjects relevant to children and young people’s development and/or mental health, they may be admitted at the discretion of the programme director so long as they have current or recent work experience providing clinical/clinically relevant experience of children and young people in mental health settings, including statutory and voluntary organisations.

Suitability will be established through:

- the completion of a personal statement submitted via the application form

- two references which address how the applicant meets the academic and/or relevant experience requirements

- an online interview, designed to determine suitability and relevant experience (where appropriate)

The Master of Public Health will equip students with the tools to identify, understand, manage and respond to complex health and social issues in inter-cultural, local and global contexts. It offers advanced skills in interpreting health information, including epidemiology, statistical methods and qualitative research methods. Students will also develop competencies in designing and evaluating public health interventions, and applying their understanding of public health practice to health promotion, health systems, health policy and health care decision making.

The course is delivered through the online management system. Four core units have a compulsory 1-2 day on-campus intensive in addition to the online learning components. Unique features of the course are the specialist electives in public health practice, Indigenous health and global health.

Students also have the option of completing the program by undertaking a supervised research project.

Career opportunities for graduates include the non-government and government sector in areas of health research; professional health practice, health planning and policy; epidemiology/biostatistics; communicable and non-communicable disease control, nationally and internationally..
