What the course involves:

In your first year you will gain a foundation in the fundamentals of health promotion and an introduction to public health, Indigenous health, psychology, sociology, human biology, professional communication skills, and how health professionals work together to improve health and wellbeing.

In your second and third years you will study the planning, implementation and evaluation of health promotion programs. You will explore specific areas of health promotion practice including:

Health and safety is concerned with the prevention of injury and disease in the workplace by providing safer, healthier and more efficient working conditions and assisting injured staff through workers’ compensation and rehabilitation processes.

In your second year, you can plan, implement, evaluate and manage an on-campus health promotion campaign. Frequent fieldtrips are undertaken in many health and safety units.

In your fourth year you will undertake two 100-hour professional practice placements. One is a placement at a health-promoting organisation where you can plan, implement and evaluate programs in urban, rural or interstate locations. The second is within an occupational health and safety setting within an industry where you will assess and manage risk in order to protect workers.

The role of the occupational health and safety (OHS) unit in an organization has been steadily and significantly rising in prominence over the last several decades, in many organizations being transferred into the Operations function. This is well-deserved, as the evidence clearly indicates that well-designed and well-managed OHS programs contribute to a much healthier, more satisfied and more productive workforce, coincidentally with a significant financial upside for the organization. However, many, if not most, managers of OHS units have risen to their management positions without any prior post-secondary education in management, and face the dual challenges of a potential performance deficit, and reduced probability of promotion into executive ranks. Thus, this program has been developed to address these challenges, by improving the post-secondary educational landscape for upwardly-mobile OHS managers and executives.
Our online Executive MBA with a focus in Occupational Health and Safety Leadership is designed for advanced-career professionals and managers of OHS units who aspire to lead their businesses towards much higher performance. It begins with coverage of foundational management essentials such as financial, analytical and decision-making skills, and knowledge of an organization's core functions and interactions. The program goes much further than that. Its core focus is on leadership techniques, especially collaborative leadership in the complex context of multiple stakeholders and multiple objectives; then it augments this core focus with a series of specialty track courses focused exclusively on the needs of OHS leaders.

Entry Requirements

All admission determinations are based on the recommendations of the Admissions Review Committee and an official decision rendered by the Dean of the Sandermoen School of Business. The Admissions Review Committee reviews each EMBA program applicant's academic and work history, with special consideration given to individuals with strong professional development records. Individuals seeking to be directly admitted to the EMBA program must first meet the following minimum admission requirements:
• An undergraduate degree from a recognized and accredited university with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale*;
• Five years of full-time employment, preferably with two years of management experience, that collectively provide strong evidence of the potential to work successfully at the middle or senior management level;
• Proficiency in English language communication (oral and written)**;
• Applicants who do not possess an undergraduate degree, but who have had significant training and/or relevant professional experience, have demonstrated potential for senior management, and/or otherwise possess demonstrable knowledge or expertise that would prepare them adequately for successful study in a specific graduate program may be granted admission and initially classified as “Pre-EMBA” students until they have successfully passed the asynchronous (self-paced online) bridging courses in business communication, accounting and in finance.*** (Upon satisfactory completion of the necessary bridging courses the student will be reclassified and enrolled as “Conditional” until he/she has completed the first three EMBA courses with at least a “B” grade earned in each course.)
*International applicants must be qualified for university or college admission in their home countries. Transcripts must show a superior performance on the basis of the country's grading scheme. All records in a foreign language must include copies of the originals accompanied by certified English translations. **An English proficiency examination and oral interview may be required if the applicant's undergraduate degree was not delivered in English, or if an applicant’s occupational experience was conducted in a non-English communication business environment. Exemption from the TOEFL Requirement

An EMBA or MBA applicant may be exempted from the TOEFL requirement if at least one of the following conditions applies. An applicant must have:
• The applicant has obtained an undergraduate degree from an English-language University;
• The applicant has studied in an English-speaking country for at least five years;
• The applicant has scored high on a well-known standardized English test;
• The applicant has successfully completed a well-known English language program;
• The applicant has scored a minimum grade of B on the Challenge Test (Placement test may be recommended preceding the challenge test at the discretion of the Admissions Review Committee).

A first or second class undergraduate degree or the equivalent, from a university or other institution acceptable to the University of West London. The degree does not need to be in psychology, but in a field appropriate to the course (e.g. nursing, law, economics, medicine, politics, IT, social work, occupational therapy, history or an appropriate professional or technical application, etc). All subjects/applications are considered on an individual basis, especially if accompanied by volunteer or field experience.

Applicant should demonstrate some experience and/or research in either a global setting or an organization with a global mission.
