Public health professionals promote population health and wellbeing in service areas such as food safety, disease control, prevention programs, health promotion and environmental health.

QUT's public health programs are designed for professionals interested in a career in public health, mid-career professionals seeking advancement and clinicians looking to broaden their range of expertise. Students in these programs obtain core skills in epidemiology and biostatistics and an understanding of contemporary and challenging population health issues.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for the Graduate Diploma in Public Health / Master of Public Health must have:
a three-year bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area (health, psychology, social work, human services, social or biological science).

It is preferred but not essential that applicants will have a minimum of one-year relevant full-time work experience on entry to this course.

Applicants may be admitted on the basis of work experience, other qualifications or research activities at the discretion of the Executive Dean.

Applicants who hold a four-year degree may be eligible for advanced standing of up to 48 credit points subject to recency and relevance of study.

The aim of the Master of Public Health (MPH) is to equip health professionals from a broad range of backgrounds to work in leadership roles in the field of public health. Students will gain an understanding the social, behavioural and cultural determinants of disease and will develop skills in the planning, evaluation, management and promotion of health programs to improve the health of populations. The program includes a strong foundation in the research disciplines of epidemiology and biostatistics which provides students with the analytical, quantitative and communication skills required of public health practitioners and researchers. The MPH has a global perspective on public and environmental health, with a particular focus on public health issues in the Asian region.

A Bachelor degree (AQF7) or above in any discipline from an Australian institution or a recognised equivalent qualification and three years of relevant work experience

a Graduate Certificate in Public Health from Torrens University Australia (or from another institution if deemed equivalent)

The Master of Public Health is a multidisciplinary course designed for public health practitioners and others wanting to develop skills and knowledge in public health.

You will undertake a number of core units covering a broad range of public health issues combined with specialist knowledge in one of the following streams:

applied epidemiology and biostatistics
health policy and management
health promotion
public health.

You will also have a choice between a dissertation and a smaller research project combined with further coursework.

This online Masters degree in Public Health provides you with the knowledge and skills to address diverse public health issues in low, middle and high income settings. The diverse curriculum allows you to opt for a broad range of knowledge or to concentrate on specialised areas. An undergraduate degree (e.g. bachelor) which is considered at least comparable to a UK second class honours degree, from an institution acceptable to the University, in one of the following subjects (and a minimum of one year’s relevant work experience): Water and Sanitation, Development Studies, Human Rights, Environmental Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Geography or Demography.

An undergraduate degree not listed above may still be considered provided this has been awarded in a subject deemed appropriate to the course and is at least comparable to a UK second class honours degree, from an institution acceptable to the University (and a minimum of one year’s relevant work experience).

Applicants who do not satisfy the above requirements may still be admitted at the discretion of the University on the basis of their academic qualifications, work experience and references.

The Master in Public Health program is designed to help graduates meet the challenges in the expansion of health issues in the nation as well as globally. From environmental health concerns, emerging and re-emerging diseases, socio-political factors affecting both our nation‛s health and health globally, to the evolving state of our current health care system, the Master of Public Health degree prepares students to take a leadership role or become subject area experts in the field of public health.

For those working directly in the health field, professionals with a Master in Public Health degree may hold positions of responsibility in a variety of settings including health care facilities, county and state health departments, social service agencies, health policy and planning organizations, universities, non-governmental organizations, international health organizations, community-based health education organizations, health promotion settings, and health care companies. Many professionals find their current career intersects with public health concerns, and earning a second degree may allow you to become a public health subject matter expert within your field. Examples include nurses working in the area of public health, attorneys working with public health organizations, journalists reporting and working on public health issues, or individuals taking on leadership roles with non-profit organizations.

In the Master in Public Health program, students will study theories, concepts, and principles of public health and as well as their application. The MPH is a generalist program and enveloped around national public health curriculum standards, using a multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes psychological, behavioral, and social factors influencing population-based health disparities; principles of epidemiology and biostatistics; environmental public health concepts; public health administration systems and processes; and economic factors. This degree prepares students for an expanding range of professional opportunities and roles in public health and medicine. The Master in Public Health program culminates with a practicum and capstone project that students are able to design to best fit their area of specific interest.
