Online Health Promotion Degree :: Accredited Universities

Idaho State University's Master of Public Health (MPH) program is unique to the state of Idaho. It is the only MPH program in Idaho that is accredited by the Council for Public Health (CEPH).

The goal of public health is to improve the health of populations through the planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion and disease-prevention programs. Public health professionals design intervention programs by using a combination of health education and related organizational, economic, legislative, and environmental support to enhance the probability of creating a healthier populace.

Focusing on community health emphasis courses include an acquisition of requisite public health knowledge and skills in the areas of epidemiology, biostatistics, health care ethics, health organization and policy, health program planning and evaluation, health marketing, health education promotion, research methodology and environmental health.

This program is designed to meet the needs of working individuals; classes are offered at night and online. MPH classes are offered in Pocatello and Boise through distance learning.

Entry Requirements

A baccalaureate degree or higher from a college or university regionally accredited in the United States or its equivalent from a school in another country.

Score an average of at least 40th percentile when considering both quantitative and verbal sections of the GRE general test but not lower than the 20th percentile in either section.

Two years of experience working in the health field is preferred for admission. A B.S. or B.A. degree in health or a health-related discipline may substitute for working experience. Applicants will be evaluated on an individual basis.

International Applicants

International students who have not graduated from an accredited college or university in the United States and whose native language is not English, normally must achieve satisfactory scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Satisfactory TOEFL requirements for Classified admission are: (1) Internet-based test (iBT): a total score of 80 with a score of at least 20 on each Section of the iBT (graduate assistants who teach courses must score 23 or above on the Speaking Section); or (2 ) Computer-based test: a total score of 213 with a score of at least 21 on Section 1 (Listening Comprehension) on the Computer-based test; or (3) Paper-based test: a total score of 550 with a score of at least 55 on Section l (Listening Comprehension) on the Paper-based test. Information about the TOEFL, including test dates and locations in international countries, can be obtained from Educational Testing Service (ETS) at www.ets.org. Satisfactory IELTS performance for Classified admission includes scoring 6.5 or higher on the total band score. Graduate assistants who teach courses must score 6.5 or above on the speaking test component. An international student may also meet the English language proficiency requirement by achieving a Level 112 from an ELS Language Center.

The Master of Public Health is offered by the School of Public Health and Community Development.

This programme leads to the degree of Master of Public Health, with specialisation in either Health Promotion and International Health or Epidemiology and Population Health.
The Master of Public Health degree programme at Maseno University is primarily concerned with the promotion of health, prevention of disease and prolonging life as well as assessment of health care delivery. Health and development studies are thus aimed at providing research, training and outreach services that focus on the needs of communities and societies. The Master of Public Health Advanced provides knowledge and understanding of the efforts made by society to protect, promote and restore people's health. The goals of public health include: promotion and improvement of health; prevention of disease, premature death, disease-produced discomfort, and disability in the population.

The program comprises four core public health subjects**, four subjects from one of the following streams:

Health Promotion**
Public Health Nutrition
Occupational Health
Social Marketing for Health**

plus an additional research project (24 credit points).

Entry Requirements

Applicants normally apply to transfer into the Master of Public Health (MPH) Advanced in the final session of their MPH program.

A minimum of 24 completed credit points with a credit grade average in MPH subjects is required, together with the availability of an appropriate academic supervisor for the Major Project. Applications for transfer are considered on a case-by-case basis and academic attainment in subjects not yet completed may also be taken into consideration.

The major emphases of the nurse practitioner tracks are to develop graduates with:

1. A base for continued inquiry and contributions to the art and science of nursing and the knowledge and skills to exert a leadership role in the formulation of healthcare policy,

2. Expertise in the provision of health care, and

3. Leadership ability in today’s healthcare environment.

Students complete courses in theory of advanced nursing practice where they develop skills in making independent clinical judgments as well as participate in experiences involving peer review, client advocacy, the development of collaborative, interdisciplinary relationships and role negotiation. Clinical instruction is carried out by nurse practitioners and/or physicians who model collaborative practice behaviors. This model of instruction allows the student to see the complementary roles of the advanced practice nurse and the physician and demonstrates the unique contributions of nursing to the care of clients.

The A.G.N.P. program prepares nurses to provide a range of healthcare services that promote wellness, prevent illness and manage health and illness needs of adults across the lifespan. The scope of practice of either the primary care or acute care N.P. is not setting specific, but is based on patient care needs. The particular expertise of the primary care A.G.N.P. emphasizes disease prevention, health promotion and the management of patients with acute and chronic multi-system health problems. The patient population of the acute care A.G.N.P. includes care of patients with complex acute, critical and chronic illness, disability and/or injury. The number of credits and clinical hours are determined by requirements for board certification in adult-gerontology. Graduates of the A.G.N.P. M.S.N. track complete a minimum of 600 supervised clinical practice hours and are eligible to sit for national certification in Primary Care or Acute Care through either the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program.

Designed specifically for individuals with undergraduate degrees in health science, dietetics, or a related area, the applied nutrition master's degree offers an opportunity to build upon this existing clinical knowledge. The online version of the program makes it easier for students already working in various health fields to continue to meet their professional commitments even as they improve their knowledge and skills.

Like its on-campus counterpart, the online Master's in Applied Nutrition program is led by real-world practitioners, including dietitians, an exercise scientist, and a clinical psychologist. Together they provide a solid grounding in nutrition, metabolism, disease prevention, health promotion, and clinical behavior. The core nutrition courses are complemented by the College’s renowned nutrition practicum, which allows students to work directly with registered dietitians, fitness specialists, and other health professionals.
