The Master of Public Health Advanced provides knowledge and understanding of the efforts made by society to protect, promote and restore people's health. The goals of public health include: promotion and improvement of health; prevention of disease, premature death, disease-produced discomfort, and disability in the population.

The program comprises four core public health subjects**, four subjects from one of the following streams:

Health Promotion**
Public Health Nutrition
Occupational Health
Social Marketing for Health**

plus an additional research project (24 credit points).

Entry Requirements

Applicants normally apply to transfer into the Master of Public Health (MPH) Advanced in the final session of their MPH program.

A minimum of 24 completed credit points with a credit grade average in MPH subjects is required, together with the availability of an appropriate academic supervisor for the Major Project. Applications for transfer are considered on a case-by-case basis and academic attainment in subjects not yet completed may also be taken into consideration.

This course will enable you to do just that. Critical appraisal of relevant health and social policy throughout the course will help you to apply new knowledge and skills to achieve advanced levels of practice, expanding your career progression opportunities. You'll also acquire the knowledge and skills you need to influence decision making at both local and strategic levels.

You'll develop a combination of theoretical and practical skills in this course, including critical thinking when considering the issues associated with practice, knowledge and application of research methods and their application, and efficient approaches to time management, prioritisation and workload planning. You will also learn to recognise and manage the personal stresses of the profession, and become proficient in the use of the latest technologies in the practice of your role.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirement for this course is a UK degree. We look for applicants to have a background in Professionals caring for the public in order to be eligible for the programme.
We may also consider lesser qualifications if candidates have sufficient relevant work experience within the industry.
If English is not your first language, it is usually required that you sit an English language test in order to gain entry onto our postgraduate programmes. This course requires the standard IELTS 6.0 with no individual component score of less than 5.5 or equivalent.

The MSc Advanced Practice reflects a number of specific drivers within social and health care practice. Working with clinical experts, specialist agencies, research centres and keynote experts ensures the course has a robust and credible practice base in both its delivery and application. This initiative addresses the changing frame of health, social, public and voluntary sector workers – whereby collaboration and shared working is recognised as meeting the needs of the individual worker, patients, public and carers.

The Advanced Practice courses are specifically designed for practitioners in health and social care and allied health professions who engage with a broad range of individuals with differing health and social care needs. The course is designed to both develop and embed knowledge, skill and confidence in practitioners who may already be working in a senior position as well as providing a base for those who are aspiring to advance their career. Each of the themed courses equips you with the ability to challenge theory, practice and effectiveness within the core elements of the course as well as in your chosen specialist fields.

We develop your ability to critically examine theoretical frameworks which can be integrated within your advanced practice. Autonomous and multi-professional working allows students from differing professions to work innovatively and learn collaboratively, in keeping with the ethos of cross-sector partnerships in health and social service provision.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of a second class Honours degree (2.1 preferred) or equivalent in a relevant subject. Applicants without these formal qualifications but with significant appropriate/relevant work/life experience are encouraged to apply.

Current professional registration as nurse or health/social care practioner is required.

The MSc Advanced Practice (Leadership) is aimed at all health and social care staff who are looking to develop their knowledge and skills as leaders within their workplace. Over the past decade, the emergence of tools such as the Leadership Qualities Framework, and the work on developing leadership skills in the workplace undertaken by the Institute for Innovation have firmly placed the requirement to demonstrate excellent and sound leadership skills as a key element of person specifications and essential attributes for senior roles within the sector.

This Master's course is likely to appeal to a wide range of professionals, for example, senior or consultant nurses (or those hoping to move into that role), community matrons/ caseload managers, social work team leaders, managers from prison and probation service, and team leaders working in the public and independent health care sectors.

If you do not have a first degree, but possess substantial work experience, you are still invited to apply. In these cases, you will be asked to present a portfolio and qualifying essay, to demonstrate your potential for studying at Master’s level. You will also need to submit an extended curriculum vitae which must demonstrate evidence of personal and professional development.

International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 7.0 or above, and a minimum of 7.0 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening), TOEFL ibt at score at 100 or above, Pearson PTE Academic at score 58 or above, or an equivalent secure English language test. This programme is open to all healthcare professionals with an interest in health in the paediatric population, epidemiology including risk factors, and public health issues including nutrition and physical activity.

Professional clinical practice, evidence-based practice, research methods, musculoskeletal health in the infant, musculoskeletal health in the pre-school child, musculoskeletal health in the school-aged child and musculoskeletal health in the adolescent.

The MSc Advanced Professional Practice (APP) degree, validated by Bournemouth University, has been developed by the AECC to support professional development. The programme provides a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals to attain the generic skills and attitudes of continuing professional development, experiential learning and reflective practice, and to develop advanced clinical and practical skills in specialised areas of practice. The MSc APP is a part-time, ‘at a distance’, programme enabling healthcare professionals to combine professional learning in the workplace with a postgraduate academic qualification.

Entry Requirements

The Paediatric Musculoskeletal Health course is intended for healthcare professionals in professional practice, including clinicians, teachers and researchers. Applicants must have a recognised professional qualification in line with the admissions regulations. Credit for prior learning is possible on approval by the Pathway Leader. Students who have successfully completed the PgCert Professional Development (Chiropractic) will be exempted from part of the programme (as specified in the individual pathways). Admission is at the discretion of the Pathway Leader.
Applicants for whom English is not their first language, must offer evidence of qualifications in written and spoken English. Acceptable qualifications are IELTS (academic) 6.0 and TOEFL 80 (internet based) or 550 (paper based), or direct equivalents.
