What the course involves:

In your first year you will gain a foundation in the fundamentals of health promotion and an introduction to public health, Indigenous health, psychology, sociology, human biology, professional communication skills, and how health professionals work together to improve health and wellbeing.

In your second and third years you will study the planning, implementation and evaluation of health promotion programs. You will explore specific areas of health promotion practice including:

physical activity
injury
alcohol
tobacco and other drugs
cancer
mental health
sexual health
nutrition
media materials and campaigns
epidemiology
biostatistics
research
advocating to influence policy and legislation.

You will also study the role of health promotion professionals working in partnership with communities, organisations, government and other health professionals.

This program can prepare you for a career as a health promotion practitioner working in community, school, workplace and media settings with both government and non-government organisations. Opportunities for interprofessional learning take place across the course.

This double degree course is designed to develop your expertise in both health promotion and occupational health and safety. Health promotion maintains and improves the health of populations by developing people’s skills and knowledge, working with communities, creating healthy environments, changing policies and laws to support healthy choices and encouraging health services to promote health.

Health and safety is concerned with the prevention of injury and disease in the workplace by providing safer, healthier and more efficient working conditions and assisting injured staff through workers’ compensation and rehabilitation processes.

What the course involves:

The occupational health and safety component of the second, third and fourth years is designed to equip you with the skills you need to contribute proactively to risk management and assessment, and the prevention of injuries and disease in the workplace. You will also study the role of the health and safety professional when working with employers, workers, commercial organisations, government and other health professionals.

In your second year, you can plan, implement, evaluate and manage an on-campus health promotion campaign. Frequent fieldtrips are undertaken in many health and safety units.

In your fourth year you will undertake two 100-hour professional practice placements. One is a placement at a health-promoting organisation where you can plan, implement and evaluate programs in urban, rural or interstate locations. The second is within an occupational health and safety setting within an industry where you will assess and manage risk in order to protect workers.

Research in health promotion; education and advancement; public health policy; household ecology encompassing sustainability, decision making and community involvement; social determinants of health with a focus on gender, ethnicity and inequality. Public Health research in nutrition includes measurement and evaluation of food sources; nutritional assessment; exercise and behaviour; sports nutrition; diet and disease with particular interest in cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis.

The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation offers graduate work leading to the Master of Science degree in HPER for students interested in advancing their education and opportunities in such areas as teaching, health promotion, coaching, and research.

Most of the graduate faculty members in the department have completed doctoral degrees. Many of the faculty members are nationally recognized in their fields. The department is housed in a facility which includes five gymnasiums, human performance lab, athletic training lab, Olympic size pool, weight room, dance studio, pedagogy lab, and computer lab.

The Masters degree offered through the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Emporia State University is completed entirely online. This unique program was the first totally online accredited Master’s degree program in HPER in the United States.

Entry Requirements

The applicant is expected to have an undergraduate degree in health, physical education or recreation or a minimum of 12 undergraduate theory credits in physical education (including an exercise physiology course), or a related field representing the same breadth of preparation required for an undergraduate degree at Emporia State University. Students lacking the prerequisites in their undergraduate preparation are required to complete additional courses as
prescribed by the advisor and committee.

The graduate committee of the department uses the
following criteria for assessing whether or not to recommend an applicant for admission to the department:

 - Undergraduate GPA (on a 4.0 scale) of 2.5 overall GPA, as well as a 2.75 GPA in the last sixty credits of college work

- Completed graduate application

 - Two written personal references

- Undergraduate professional preparation in physical education (or related field)

- International students must register as an international student
