Program Objectives - To give graduates a thorough knowledge of the pedagogy of online teaching and learning, from synchronous versus asynchronous learning and instructional design for students with disabilities to the variety of technology tools that can be used - To prepare graduates to create complete online courses, all built on up-to-date best practices in OTL, from whatever current teaching or training materials they now use - To give graduates the confidence and experience to design, implement, and teach effective online courses - To allow educators and trainers, who already design, implement, or teach online courses, to enhance their levels of expertise by updating their skills and knowledge of evolving best practices in online learning. Entry RequirementsFor admission into the M.S Ed., Option in Online Teaching and Learning degree program, applicants must: - Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution - Have earned a GPA of 3.0 in the last 90 quarter units (or semester equivalent) of upper-division, post-baccalaureate or graduate-level course-work - Have teaching or training experience - Submit all graduate application materials to the Office of Admissions by the deadline date - Request official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended to be sent to Cal State East Bay. Final official transcripts, showing degree completion, must be received prior to enrollment in classes - Submit a letter of intent directly to Dr. Nan Chico which indicates why they want to be admitted to the program, any relevant teaching or training experience and their future goals as it relates to the degree. Health care delivery is undergoing rapid growth and change in the U.S., a change that has accelerated in the 21st century. As a result, the responsibilities of health care administrators and managers are continuously being redefined. In this dynamic environment, organizations must manage for continuous improvement and maintain flexibility to respond to the latest challenges. This underscores the constant need for health care professionals to keep pace with new knowledge and gain new skills. The Online MS in Health Care Administration program seeks to develop professionals who understand how to manage non-profit, for-profit, and voluntary health care organizations in effective and innovative ways and who can help health care organizations successfully meet the challenges of a rapidly changing environment. Students in the MS in Health Care Administration program acquire the analytical skills needed to explore new models of health care delivery and organizational design. Program Objectives The Health Care Leadership Alliance (HLA), a consortium of major professional health care associations, has identified five competency domains in which all health care administrators and managers should have proficiency for workplace effectiveness. By successfully completing this program, students will be able to demonstrate competency in the following five domains: - Communication and Relationship Management: The ability to communicate clearly and concisely with internal and external customers, to establish and maintain relationships, and to facilitate constructive interactions with individuals and groups - Leadership: The ability to inspire individual and organizational excellence, to create and attain a shared vision, and to successfully manage change to attain the organization's strategic ends and successful performance - Professionalism: The ability to align personal and organizational conduct with ethical and professional standards that include a responsibility to the patient and community, a service orientation, and a commitment to lifelong learning and improvement - Knowledge of the Health Care Environment: The demonstrated understanding of the health care system and the environment in which health care managers and providers function - Business Skills and Knowledge: The ability to apply business principles to the health care environment; basic business principles include financial management, human resource management, organizational dynamics and governance, strategic planning and marketing, information management, risk management, and quality improvement Entry RequirementsThe MS-HCA degree program is open to applicants planning a career or advancing a career in the health care field who have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. Admission will be granted based upon the Admission Committee's overall assessment of the student's qualifications and academic/career potential, using the following criteria: Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5; Statement of Purpose in pursuing the HCA degree (a 1-2 page essay double-spaced, explaining who you are, your career goals and how the MS HCA degree will help you achieve those goals, and why you believe you will be successful in the program); Two letters of academic and/or professional recommendation (on letterhead). The letter writers should include how they know you, if they think you would be successful in the program and why they think that; Professional resume/vita; All undergraduate/graduate transcripts. Students “come” to ”class” at times when they are ready to learn—not at a specific time in the evening after working all day. It is not a self-paced program. Discussions happen asynchronously. One might log on at 10 p.m. or find a classmate is awake and doing work online at 4 a.m. after his night shift. This way of learning is different. You are not only the receiver of knowledge—you are actively engaged in your own learning. You will be asked not only to absorb information, but also to discover and create knowledge. The role of the instructor is the designer of these learning challenges. This is much more like what happens in the real world of work.
