The Master of Science in Nursing: Public Health degree program is designed for nurses interested in disease prevention and community health who are seeking a career where they are involved in the coordination, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of health programs and services. Public health professionals draw on knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines to define, assess, and ultimately resolve public health problems.

Professionals who graduate with an MSN in public health degree may hold positions of responsibility in a variety of settings, including; hospitals, health care facilities, county and state health departments, social service agencies, health policy and planning organizations, universities, nongovernmental organizations including international health organizations, county, state and federal governmental agencies, community-based health education and health promotion settings, and the corporate world.

Students will study theories, concepts, and principles of public health and their application. The curriculum, developed around the nursing core and national public health curriculum standards, uses a multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes psychological, behavioral, and social factors influencing population-based health disparities; principles of epidemiology and biostatistics; environmental public health concepts; public health administration systems and processes; and economic factors. This program prepares students for an expanding range of professional opportunities and roles in public health and nursing. The Master of Science in Nursing: Public Health degree program culminates with a practicum and capstone project that students are able to design to best fit their area of specific interest.

Physical activity has been described as the “best buy” in public health. The increasing realisation of the importance of promoting higher levels of physical activity, coupled with the government’s agenda to reduce the proportion of sedentary and obese children and adults, requires a co-coordinated public health approach.

To help meet these needs, Staffordshire University led the way by developing the MSc Physical Activity and Public Health which was the first academic programme of its kind in the UK to be offered by online distance learning.

The award covers the main area of public health, such as principles that underpin practice and epidemiology. It focuses on research method and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative inquiry (often used as evidence in health improvement), physical activity specific modules relating to disease prevention and critiquing interventions, and strategies around working with and engaging communities. Finally, there is an independent research project of your choice, with a specialist focus on physical activity.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will normally: possess an honours degree of class (2:1) or above (awarded by a United Kingdom university) or equivalent; have a minimum of one year working professional experience in community or government setting, or similar. Most students are already working full-time in a related area. For those with a professional qualification, Accreditation of Prior Achievement (APA) will be considered.
Those whose first language is not English need to demonstrate a minimum of:

• a minimum score of 7.0 on IELTS (International English Language Testing System) as administered by the British Council in most countries

Public health aims to improve the health of populations through knowledge (collecting data to develop and test explanations and hypotheses), values (combining ethics with knowledge to assist in decision-making), action (making decisions to translate research into policy and practice and advocate for change) and outcomes (understanding research and practice to systematically evaluate public health programs).

Students will be exposed to public health values, decision-making, practice and policy throughout their studies.

Entry Requirements

A successful applicant for admission to the degree of Master of Public Health requires:
(a) a minimum four-year full time degree or equivalent qualification from the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification; or
(b) a shorter degree from the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification, and non-degree professional qualifications and/or substantial relevant experience and/or other relevant qualifications.

In exceptional circumstances the Dean may admit applicants without these qualifications who, in the opinion of the School, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.

The Master of Public Health will equip students with the tools to identify, understand, manage and respond to complex health and social issues in inter-cultural, local and global contexts. It offers advanced skills in interpreting health information, including epidemiology, statistical methods and qualitative research methods. Students will also develop competencies in designing and evaluating public health interventions, and applying their understanding of public health practice to health promotion, health systems, health policy and health care decision making.

The course is delivered through the online management system. Four core units have a compulsory 1-2 day on-campus intensive in addition to the online learning components. Unique features of the course are the specialist electives in public health practice, Indigenous health and global health.

Students also have the option of completing the program by undertaking a supervised research project.

Career opportunities for graduates include the non-government and government sector in areas of health research; professional health practice, health planning and policy; epidemiology/biostatistics; communicable and non-communicable disease control, nationally and internationally..

This course requires a high level of academic reading and writing. Students who are not confident with their academic literacy skills are encouraged to develop them prior to enrolling.

Successful completion of a recognised bachelors degree of four years duration or equivalent. Applicants with a completed Graduate Diploma of Public Health from CDU are also eligible.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for the Graduate Diploma in Public Health / Master of Public Health must have:
a three-year bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area (health, psychology, social work, human services, social or biological science).

It is preferred but not essential that applicants will have a minimum of one-year relevant full-time work experience on entry to this course.

Applicants may be admitted on the basis of work experience, other qualifications or research activities at the discretion of the Executive Dean.

Applicants who hold a four-year degree may be eligible for advanced standing of up to 48 credit points subject to recency and relevance of study.
