The Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) program is devoted to the environmental health dimension of public health. It is accredited by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors and graduates are academically eligible to sit for national certification examinations leading to the credential Certified Public Health Inspector (Canada) - CPHI(C). The program is available in a four-year option, a two-year post-diploma/degree accelerated option and a one- year professional degree completion option, available via distance education for those already holding the CPHI(C) credential

Entry Requirements

General Undergraduate Admission Requirements
An overall average of 65% is required for all students applying to most CBU credit programs based on high school performance. Additional requirements may apply to specific programs.
If space permits, CBU will accept all candidates who can verify that they have met the minimum entry requirements established by CBU for the programs in which they wish to enroll.
Note: CBU does not guarantee that applications completed after August 1, will be processed for September registration.

Admission Paths
Students may enter Cape Breton University by any of three paths, subject to restrictions of space and program capacity.
1. High school graduates who satisfy the admission requirements of their chosen program.
2. Students who transfer from another post-secondary institution and who are in good standing at that institution and who satisfy the admission requirements for their chosen program. Transfer students may be able to obtain credit in their CBU programs for courses taken elsewhere.
3. Students may also be admitted as non-traditional learners.
Students who enter CBU through any of the above paths and who have not made a final decision in a program may register as students in No Specific Program.
Applicants will be required to submit official documents (e.g. transcripts from other institutions) when they apply for admission. Normally these documents are sent directly from the other institutions to CBU.
Students will also require the approval of the relevant School Dean to register at another university or college while attending CBU.
International Admission Requirements
• Applications for admissions from international students will be reviewed on an individual basis.
• We require graduation from an academic secondary school program or equivalent, with an average of ‘C’ in five senior academic-level/university preparatory courses.

This MPH Public Health course combines the work of public health theory, practice and research, with expertise from: Life and Medical Science, Nursing and Social Work and The Business School at the University of Hertfordshire.

The range of optional modules offered and the breadth of cases used across the programme will provide opportunities for specialism in the global and local context in areas including:

Commissioning and leadership

Management of the double burden of communicable and non-communicable conditions

Primary care

Child health

Health system approaches to improving public health outcomes and addressing health inequalities.

Entry Requirements

A recent 2.2 honours degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent (e.g. honours degree from the UK) or equivalent. Or relevant experience in the area public health may be considered in place of a degree.

GCSE (or equivalent) in Mathematics with minimum grade C.

Applicants who do not wholly meet these requirements, but who are considered to have the professional experience, motivation or potential to succeed at the programme, may also be accepted.

English language requirements

All students from non-majority English speaking countries require proof of English language proficiency. The following qualifications and grades will be considered:

GCSE (or equivalent) in English Language grade A-C.

IELTS 7.0 (with no less than 6.5 in any band)

This PhD programme offers people working in public health an opportunity to gain key skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods and research ethics, as well as a more critical insight into their practice. The format of the programme (part-time blended learning) has been specifically designed to meet the needs of public health professionals wishing to complete doctoral training and make an original contribution to knowledge development within their field, whilst at the same time fulfilling their existing responsibilities.

The aims of the course are to:

Develop advanced skills in research design, practice and dissemination
Promote a critical understanding of public health policy and practice
Foster critical approaches to evidence review and knowledge management
Improve scholarship in presenting written and oral arguments
Enhance leadership skills and effectiveness.

Entry Requirements

A good first degree (minimum 2:1);

Relevant experience of working within the field of public health OR a Masters in Public Health or a related field;

If English is not your first language

an overall IELTS score of at least 6.5 is required (a minimum of 5.5 must be achieved in each separate skill: writing, reading, listening and speaking).

an overall Pearson PTE Academic of atleast 62 (with 51 in each communicative skill) must be achieved.

Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) - Grade C is required.

Applicants must also include with their application:

Two references from individuals able to comment on the applicant's suitability for doctoral study (at least one should be from an academic);

A 500 word research proposal which should include an introduction to the study topic, research questions and the methods that may be used. (We acknowledge that applicants who are admitted to the programme may wish to change their topic and/or research methods as their ideas develop);

A personal statement giving a clear indication of their motivation for pursuing a PhD in Public Health.

An undergraduate degree (e.g. bachelor) which is considered at least comparable to a UK second class honours degree, from an institution acceptable to the University, in one of the following subjects (and a minimum of one year’s relevant work experience): Water and Sanitation, Development Studies, Human Rights, Environmental Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Geography or Demography.

An undergraduate degree not listed above may still be considered provided this has been awarded in a subject deemed appropriate to the course and is at least comparable to a UK second class honours degree, from an institution acceptable to the University (and a minimum of one year’s relevant work experience).

Applicants who do not satisfy the above requirements may still be admitted at the discretion of the University on the basis of their academic qualifications, work experience and references.

The Public Health MRes provides an innovative distance learning research degree which has been shown to meet the needs of health service researchers, both in the UK and worldwide. The modular nature enables you to design the taught component around your own training needs.

This programme provides an introduction to research development, mainly for those currently in the health care workforce who wish to become researchers or pursue a research pathway within their profession.
This is done through a combination of coursework and research training.

This programme is ideal for Academic Clinical Fellows (ACF's) who wish to gain a research experience in the field of public health.

Entry Requirements

You should have a minimum of an upper second class honours degree or the overseas equivalent.

Applications with a lower second class honours degree and a minimum of three years professional public health related experience may also be considered.
