The Master in Public Health program is designed to help graduates meet the challenges in the expansion of health issues in the nation as well as globally. From environmental health concerns, emerging and re-emerging diseases, socio-political factors affecting both our nation‛s health and health globally, to the evolving state of our current health care system, the Master of Public Health degree prepares students to take a leadership role or become subject area experts in the field of public health.

For those working directly in the health field, professionals with a Master in Public Health degree may hold positions of responsibility in a variety of settings including health care facilities, county and state health departments, social service agencies, health policy and planning organizations, universities, non-governmental organizations, international health organizations, community-based health education organizations, health promotion settings, and health care companies. Many professionals find their current career intersects with public health concerns, and earning a second degree may allow you to become a public health subject matter expert within your field. Examples include nurses working in the area of public health, attorneys working with public health organizations, journalists reporting and working on public health issues, or individuals taking on leadership roles with non-profit organizations.

In the Master in Public Health program, students will study theories, concepts, and principles of public health and as well as their application. The MPH is a generalist program and enveloped around national public health curriculum standards, using a multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes psychological, behavioral, and social factors influencing population-based health disparities; principles of epidemiology and biostatistics; environmental public health concepts; public health administration systems and processes; and economic factors. This degree prepares students for an expanding range of professional opportunities and roles in public health and medicine. The Master in Public Health program culminates with a practicum and capstone project that students are able to design to best fit their area of specific interest.

The Masters in Public Health program is designed to provide a solid foundation in the core disciplines of public health: biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health sciences, health services administration, and social/behavioral sciences.

Graduates are employed in management positions in both the public and private sectors. Graduates employed in the public sector work in local, state, or federal health departments, and university systems as researchers. Graduates employed in a non-profit organization work in positions that promote health advocacy and policy, while other public health professionals work in the private sector for pharmaceutical companies or for health insurance companies.

Entry Requirements

a. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or
university.

b. An ACT score of 24 or higher.

c. Proof of prior passing scores on both the reading and
math sections of the TEAS v2 exam. Prior scores are valid
for one year from the date of testing.

Applicants with a cut-off score below 20 are required to
take the TEAS exam to further determine which English
and/or math remedial courses they need to pass prior to
starting their program.

International Applicants
----------------------------------

1. Applicants to a master’s program must provide proof
of a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent that has been
translated into English and evaluated by a credential
evaluation service.

2. Applicants must provide evidence of English proficiency
in one of the following ways: (i) minimum TOEFL
score of 550 paper-based or 213 computer-based or 79
iBT-based or (ii) 6.0 on IELTS.

Indiana State University offers the master of science (M.S.) in health sciences with a concentration in public health to students who are interested in advancing their careers or education. This master's program provides a general mastery of public health beyond that of the undergraduate level. The program is particularly recommended for students who wish to assume additional organizational responsibility or who wish to pursue a doctorate degree.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum requirements:

1. Hold a baccalaureate degree, including the following undergraduate courses:

- Two semesters of college-level anatomy and physiology; and
- One semester of college-level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or statistics

2. Have earned one of the following:

- a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.7 in all undergraduate coursework

- a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework

- a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in the applicant's major field of study

- a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all courses taken at the graduate level

3. Meet one of the following professional requirements:

- Baccalaureate degree in allied health professions; or

- Two years of professional work experience within the field of health care, public health, or health education/promotion, as approved by the Department of Applied Health Sciences

4. Submit a letter of interest describing academic and/or employment experience as well as reasons for pursuing the master's degree.

5. Submit a current resume (1-2 pages).

6. Provide the name, email address, and telephone number of at least two references.
