This course follows the MSc Health Improvement and Health Promotion programme that has run successfully since 2009.

At a time when strategies and policies for improving individual and population health are firmly on the agenda of governments globally, this course has been specifically designed to meet these challenges and demand from stakeholders and prospective students.

The importance of innovative approaches to health and social care has never been more critical with the widening inequalities gap, the continuing global financial crisis and climate change. The new public health approach has different characteristics from the old public health model and now includes prevention and promotion whilst giving recognition of the social determinants of health. This course will allow you to develop the skills required to meet existing and emerging challenges locally, nationally and internationally.

You will explore the principles of health promotion and public health and address current issues in improving health and the prevention of disease including epidemiology. You will examine the impact of health inequalities and explore global health and health psychology and the principles of behaviour change.

Entry Requirements

Typically you will have a degree/honours degree and a minimum of one year’s work experience in a health related industry or a professional qualification.

For international students IELTS 7 or its equivalent in TOEFL is required.

To be eligible for admission to this degree program at Mississippi State University, a student must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a minimum QPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale over four years of undergraduate work or 3.00 GPA over the last two years of undergraduate work for regular admission. Applicants must have taken the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). International students are required a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the Paper-based Test (PBT) or 173 on the Computer-based Test (CBT) or 79 on the Internet-based Test (IBT) or 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is a professional degree offered by Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in collaboration with Old Dominion University.

The degree will be granted jointly by both institutions, but EVMS is the school of record. Admission and tuition are all handled by EVMS.

Entry Requirements

Requirements for admission include:

1. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a competitive Grade Point Average (GPA) (minimum of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale).

2. Receipt of a bachelor’s degree prior to matriculating as an EVMS student. If the bachelor’s degree was issued by a U.S. college or university, as a general rule it should be from a regionally accredited institution. However, the program may grant exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

3. Official transcripts from the awarding institution must specify the date upon which the degree was issued.

4. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the last 5 years.

5. The GMAT or MCAT may be substituted for the GRE.
