Online Health Promotion Public Degree :: Accredited Universities

The MSc in Mental Health and Well-being of Children, Young People and Families is a new fully online programme, offering study in psychological aspects attached to psychosocial well-being and mental health promotion during development.

The programme offers the core elements of theory and research in mental health and well-being promotion in a developmental context. It fosters a critical and reflective approach to the application of these elements in a broad variety of settings including education, health, international development, and public health.

The programme will enable graduates and professionals from different professional backgrounds (such as clinical, educational, social services, public health, policy making, non-governmental organizations and international development) to:

- Develop their knowledge through engagement with research and scholarship in psychological theory and practice

- Develop skills in the critical appraisal of psychological practice in the field of child, adolescent and family mental health and well-being promotion

- Develop and consolidate an extended knowledge base of theoretical and applied approaches to mental health and well-being for children and young people

Core courses will be both conceptual and applied. At the conceptual level, the programme will review different theories of human well-being across the lifespan including psychological factors involved in the complex structure of healthy child development. At the applied level it will include a critical appraisal of the current evidence base and psychological practice, a review of the World Health Organization guidelines and the most recent approaches of mental health promotion.

The degree may be taken as Cert / Dip or MSc in Mental Health and Well-being of Children, Young People and Families. Courses will also be offered separately as Continuing Professional Development modules for graduate students and practitioners.

In contrast with the other programmes offered by Clinical Psychology, it is to be delivered fully online. The team behind this proposal have solid experience of online education, and includes two experienced e-learning developers. The online format is ideal for reaching a broad range of international professionals seeking advanced training in psychological aspects related to psychosocial well-being during development.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for the programme will be considered on an individual basis. Guidelines for likely acceptance onto the course are possession of an undergraduate degree or equivalent (reaching SCQF level 9).

Where an applicant’s undergraduate degree does not meet the level stated above or is not obviously related to subjects relevant to children and young people’s development and/or mental health, they may be admitted at the discretion of the programme director so long as they have current or recent work experience providing clinical/clinically relevant experience of children and young people in mental health settings, including statutory and voluntary organisations.

Suitability will be established through:

- the completion of a personal statement submitted via the application form

- two references which address how the applicant meets the academic and/or relevant experience requirements

- an online interview, designed to determine suitability and relevant experience (where appropriate)

The Master of Science in Nursing: Public Health degree program is designed for nurses interested in disease prevention and community health who are seeking a career where they are involved in the coordination, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of health programs and services. Public health professionals draw on knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines to define, assess, and ultimately resolve public health problems.

Professionals who graduate with an MSN in public health degree may hold positions of responsibility in a variety of settings, including; hospitals, health care facilities, county and state health departments, social service agencies, health policy and planning organizations, universities, nongovernmental organizations including international health organizations, county, state and federal governmental agencies, community-based health education and health promotion settings, and the corporate world.

Students will study theories, concepts, and principles of public health and their application. The curriculum, developed around the nursing core and national public health curriculum standards, uses a multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes psychological, behavioral, and social factors influencing population-based health disparities; principles of epidemiology and biostatistics; environmental public health concepts; public health administration systems and processes; and economic factors. This program prepares students for an expanding range of professional opportunities and roles in public health and nursing. The Master of Science in Nursing: Public Health degree program culminates with a practicum and capstone project that students are able to design to best fit their area of specific interest.

The Master of Public Health will equip students with the tools to identify, understand, manage and respond to complex health and social issues in inter-cultural, local and global contexts. It offers advanced skills in interpreting health information, including epidemiology, statistical methods and qualitative research methods. Students will also develop competencies in designing and evaluating public health interventions, and applying their understanding of public health practice to health promotion, health systems, health policy and health care decision making.

The course is delivered through the online management system. Four core units have a compulsory 1-2 day on-campus intensive in addition to the online learning components. Unique features of the course are the specialist electives in public health practice, Indigenous health and global health.

Students also have the option of completing the program by undertaking a supervised research project.

Career opportunities for graduates include the non-government and government sector in areas of health research; professional health practice, health planning and policy; epidemiology/biostatistics; communicable and non-communicable disease control, nationally and internationally..

This course requires a high level of academic reading and writing. Students who are not confident with their academic literacy skills are encouraged to develop them prior to enrolling.

Applicants for the Graduate Diploma in Public Health / Master of Public Health must have:
a three-year bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area (health, psychology, social work, human services, social or biological science).

It is preferred but not essential that applicants will have a minimum of one-year relevant full-time work experience on entry to this course.

Applicants may be admitted on the basis of work experience, other qualifications or research activities at the discretion of the Executive Dean.

The aim of the Master of Public Health (MPH) is to equip health professionals from a broad range of backgrounds to work in leadership roles in the field of public health. Students will gain an understanding the social, behavioural and cultural determinants of disease and will develop skills in the planning, evaluation, management and promotion of health programs to improve the health of populations. The program includes a strong foundation in the research disciplines of epidemiology and biostatistics which provides students with the analytical, quantitative and communication skills required of public health practitioners and researchers. The MPH has a global perspective on public and environmental health, with a particular focus on public health issues in the Asian region.
