The Bachelor of Medical Science (Specialisation) provides you with the opportunity to work in an exciting and rewarding career in one of three specialist areas including Clinical Investigation, Nutrition or Pathology. Each of the specialist areas explores relevant health and disease issues.

In order to help you determine your desired and most suited career path, you will gain exposure to foundation knowledge in sciences, study and research skills and health professional practice throughout your fi rst year of study in this degree. You will then be asked to decide on your specialist interest area at the end of your fi rst year.

Clinical physiologists (Clinical Investigation) measure function within the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous system to exclude or confirm disease and then monitor progress in response to therapy.

Nutritionists are concerned with promoting and maintaining healthy lifestyle choices and preventing diet-related diseases in our communities. Nutritionists work in a number of industries including health promotion, public health, Indigenous health, food services, food or health corporations and engage in further study or research in public health nutrition, nutrition and dietetics, education, health service management, and environmental health.

Medical laboratory scientists, specialising in pathology, examine bodily samples to assist in making a diagnosis regarding a patient’s medical condition.

The program has been developed in consultation with key industry bodies and professionals and incorporates up to 480 hours of work integrated learning during each three year program. This ensures you graduate with the practical skills required to be career-ready and highly attractive to prospective employers. If you choose to study the program by distance education, you have the flexibility to fit study with your work and other lifestyle commitments. There is also an option to exit the degree after successful completion of the first 16 courses with an Associate Degree of Medical Science (Specialisation).

The Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner degree is an advanced practice degree that prepares experienced professional nurses for advanced practice as primary care providers. The family nurse practitioner (FNP) makes independent critical judgments in all levels of prevention, including health promotion; illness prevention; and diagnosis and management of health conditions for individuals, families, communities, and populations. The FNP, as an advanced practice nurse, may be prepared to provide primary health care to individuals of all ages from infants through adulthood. Historically, the FNP has significantly contributed to the health care of the underserved populations in both urban and rural areas.

The family nurse practitioner performs comprehensive health assessments, diagnoses illness, and prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments to manage acute and chronic health problems to achieve quality cost-effective outcomes in a culturally sensitive context. The role of the nurse practitioner includes educating, consulting and collaborating, using research to make practice decisions, and influencing professional and public policies. Within various practice settings, the family nurse practitioner provides health care for clients across the lifespan. This family nurse practitioner degree program includes an exploration of the following topics: nursing and health care research; ethics, policy and finance in the health care system; advanced physiology and pathophysiology; advanced pharmacology; advanced health assessment and diagnostic reasoning; health promotion; management of adult health care problems; management of pediatric and adolescent health care problems; management of women's health care issues; and the management of geriatric issues in primary care.

This program also includes a 650-hour practicum experience, in which students collaborate with faculty members to select a community-based primary or family health-focused clinical site. This clinical practicum affords students the opportunity to apply clinical-decision management of primary health problems for diverse clients across the life span. Students analyze case studies in accordance with the guidelines of evidence-based practice and current standards of care.The family nurse practitioner degree program culminates in a capstone course which provides an opportunity for students to develop an evidence-based practice project proposal that addresses a problem, issue, or concern in professional practice.

The Bachelor of Science in nutrition communication combines writing and journalism skills with an expertise in health-related topics.

Growing public demand for health information has created a need for communicators with a thorough understanding of health and nutrition issues. Offered through ASU’s School of Nutrition and Health Promotion, this program trains students to be expert reporters of health and wellness topics.

Students in this program will have an advantage over traditional journalists by receiving training in nutrition assessment and evidence-based nutrition practices. The nutrition communication program includes a broad range of course topics taught by expert faculty, such as nutrition, human anatomy, writing and statistics. The curriculum provides a well-rounded skillset for disseminating accurate and in-depth information.

Graduates of the nutrition communication program will find employment opportunities within a variety of areas, including print and online newspapers, magazines, and other publications, as well as private corporations and community and healthcare agencies. Positions may include writers, journalists, public relations representatives and program or product development consultants.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must successfully complete ASU competency requirements. Admission may be granted with one deficiency in no more than two competency areas. Deficiencies cannot be in both math and laboratory science. Students must earn a minimum 2.0 in any subject area. Most competencies may also be met by test scores or college courses.
