Online Health Promotion Education Degree :: Accredited Universities

The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is a professional degree offered by Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in collaboration with Old Dominion University.

The degree will be granted jointly by both institutions, but EVMS is the school of record. Admission and tuition are all handled by EVMS.

Entry Requirements

Requirements for admission include:

1. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a competitive Grade Point Average (GPA) (minimum of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale).

2. Receipt of a bachelor’s degree prior to matriculating as an EVMS student. If the bachelor’s degree was issued by a U.S. college or university, as a general rule it should be from a regionally accredited institution. However, the program may grant exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

3. Official transcripts from the awarding institution must specify the date upon which the degree was issued.

4. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the last 5 years.

5. The GMAT or MCAT may be substituted for the GRE.

International applicants

The role of the occupational health and safety (OHS) unit in an organization has been steadily and significantly rising in prominence over the last several decades, in many organizations being transferred into the Operations function. This is well-deserved, as the evidence clearly indicates that well-designed and well-managed OHS programs contribute to a much healthier, more satisfied and more productive workforce, coincidentally with a significant financial upside for the organization. However, many, if not most, managers of OHS units have risen to their management positions without any prior post-secondary education in management, and face the dual challenges of a potential performance deficit, and reduced probability of promotion into executive ranks. Our online Executive MBA with a focus in Occupational Health and Safety Leadership is designed for advanced-career professionals and managers of OHS units who aspire to lead their businesses towards much higher performance. It begins with coverage of foundational management essentials such as financial, analytical and decision-making skills, and knowledge of an organization's core functions and interactions. The program goes much further than that. Its core focus is on leadership techniques, especially collaborative leadership in the complex context of multiple stakeholders and multiple objectives; then it augments this core focus with a series of specialty track courses focused exclusively on the needs of OHS leaders.

Entry Requirements

All admission determinations are based on the recommendations of the Admissions Review Committee and an official decision rendered by the Dean of the Sandermoen School of Business. The Admissions Review Committee reviews each EMBA program applicant's academic and work history, with special consideration given to individuals with strong professional development records. Individuals seeking to be directly admitted to the EMBA program must first meet the following minimum admission requirements:
• An undergraduate degree from a recognized and accredited university with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale*;
• Five years of full-time employment, preferably with two years of management experience, that collectively provide strong evidence of the potential to work successfully at the middle or senior management level;
• Proficiency in English language communication (oral and written)**;
• Applicants who do not possess an undergraduate degree, but who have had significant training and/or relevant professional experience, have demonstrated potential for senior management, and/or otherwise possess demonstrable knowledge or expertise that would prepare them adequately for successful study in a specific graduate program may be granted admission and initially classified as “Pre-EMBA” students until they have successfully passed the asynchronous (self-paced online) bridging courses in business communication, accounting and in finance.*** (Upon satisfactory completion of the necessary bridging courses the student will be reclassified and enrolled as “Conditional” until he/she has completed the first three EMBA courses with at least a “B” grade earned in each course.)
*International applicants must be qualified for university or college admission in their home countries. Transcripts must show a superior performance on the basis of the country's grading scheme. All records in a foreign language must include copies of the originals accompanied by certified English translations. **An English proficiency examination and oral interview may be required if the applicant's undergraduate degree was not delivered in English, or if an applicant’s occupational experience was conducted in a non-English communication business environment. An applicant must achieve a score of 550 or better on the TOEFL test (213 for the computer-based test), or a score of 6.5 on the IELTS. ***Individuals providing an official university transcript indicating passage of a standard course in accounting and/or finance will be waived from taking one or both of those bridging courses.
Exemption from the TOEFL Requirement

An EMBA or MBA applicant may be exempted from the TOEFL requirement if at least one of the following conditions applies. An applicant must have:
• The applicant has obtained an undergraduate degree from an English-language University;
• The applicant has studied in an English-speaking country for at least five years;
• The applicant has scored high on a well-known standardized English test;
• The applicant has successfully completed a well-known English language program;
• The applicant has scored a minimum grade of B on the Challenge Test (Placement test may be recommended preceding the challenge test at the discretion of the Admissions Review Committee).

The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation offers graduate work leading to the Master of Science degree in HPER for students interested in advancing their education and opportunities in such areas as teaching, health promotion, coaching, and research.

Most of the graduate faculty members in the department have completed doctoral degrees. Many of the faculty members are nationally recognized in their fields. The department is housed in a facility which includes five gymnasiums, human performance lab, athletic training lab, Olympic size pool, weight room, dance studio, pedagogy lab, and computer lab.

The Masters degree offered through the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Emporia State University is completed entirely online. This unique program was the first totally online accredited Master’s degree program in HPER in the United States.

Entry Requirements

The applicant is expected to have an undergraduate degree in health, physical education or recreation or a minimum of 12 undergraduate theory credits in physical education (including an exercise physiology course), or a related field representing the same breadth of preparation required for an undergraduate degree at Emporia State University. Students lacking the prerequisites in their undergraduate preparation are required to complete additional courses as
prescribed by the advisor and committee.

The graduate committee of the department uses the
following criteria for assessing whether or not to recommend an applicant for admission to the department:

 - Undergraduate GPA (on a 4.0 scale) of 2.5 overall GPA, as well as a 2.75 GPA in the last sixty credits of college work

- Completed graduate application

 - Two written personal references

- Undergraduate professional preparation in physical education (or related field)
