Show More The Master in Public Health program is designed to help graduates meet the challenges in the expansion of health issues in the nation as well as globally. From environmental health concerns, emerging and re-emerging diseases, socio-political factors affecting both our nation‛s health and health globally, to the evolving state of our current health care system, the Master of Public Health degree prepares students to take a leadership role or become subject area experts in the field of public health. For those working directly in the health field, professionals with a Master in Public Health degree may hold positions of responsibility in a variety of settings including health care facilities, county and state health departments, social service agencies, health policy and planning organizations, universities, non-governmental organizations, international health organizations, community-based health education organizations, health promotion settings, and health care companies. Many professionals find their current career intersects with public health concerns, and earning a second degree may allow you to become a public health subject matter expert within your field. Examples include nurses working in the area of public health, attorneys working with public health organizations, journalists reporting and working on public health issues, or individuals taking on leadership roles with non-profit organizations. In the Master in Public Health program, students will study theories, concepts, and principles of public health and as well as their application. The MPH is a generalist program and enveloped around national public health curriculum standards, using a multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes psychological, behavioral, and social factors influencing population-based health disparities; principles of epidemiology and biostatistics; environmental public health concepts; public health administration systems and processes; and economic factors. This degree prepares students for an expanding range of professional opportunities and roles in public health and medicine. The Master in Public Health program culminates with a practicum and capstone project that students are able to design to best fit their area of specific interest. Show More Idaho State University's Master of Public Health (MPH) program is unique to the state of Idaho. It is the only MPH program in Idaho that is accredited by the Council for Public Health (CEPH). The goal of public health is to improve the health of populations through the planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion and disease-prevention programs. Public health professionals design intervention programs by using a combination of health education and related organizational, economic, legislative, and environmental support to enhance the probability of creating a healthier populace. Focusing on community health emphasis courses include an acquisition of requisite public health knowledge and skills in the areas of epidemiology, biostatistics, health care ethics, health organization and policy, health program planning and evaluation, health marketing, health education promotion, research methodology and environmental health. This program is designed to meet the needs of working individuals; classes are offered at night and online. MPH classes are offered in Pocatello and Boise through distance learning. Entry RequirementsA baccalaureate degree or higher from a college or university regionally accredited in the United States or its equivalent from a school in another country. Score an average of at least 40th percentile when considering both quantitative and verbal sections of the GRE general test but not lower than the 20th percentile in either section. Two years of experience working in the health field is preferred for admission. A B.S. or B.A. degree in health or a health-related discipline may substitute for working experience. Applicants will be evaluated on an individual basis.
International Applicants
International students who have not graduated from an accredited college or university in the United States and whose native language is not English, normally must achieve satisfactory scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Satisfactory TOEFL requirements for Classified admission are: (1) Internet-based test (iBT): a total score of 80 with a score of at least 20 on each Section of the iBT (graduate assistants who teach courses must score 23 or above on the Speaking Section); or (2 ) Computer-based test: a total score of 213 with a score of at least 21 on Section 1 (Listening Comprehension) on the Computer-based test; or (3) Paper-based test: a total score of 550 with a score of at least 55 on Section l (Listening Comprehension) on the Paper-based test. Information about the TOEFL, including test dates and locations in international countries, can be obtained from Educational Testing Service (ETS) at www.ets.org. Satisfactory IELTS performance for Classified admission includes scoring 6.5 or higher on the total band score. Graduate assistants who teach courses must score 6.5 or above on the speaking test component.
