The Master of Science is a 240 credit qualification for students who want to pursue postgraduate study and research in a specific field.

Entry Requirements

Master of Science

Admission to the Master of Science (240 credits) is open to students who have completed one of the following minimum pre-requisites, at an appropriate level of academic achievement:

A Bachelor of Science degree, or close equivalent, with a minimum B average in the majoring 300 level papers
A Bachelor of Science degree, or close equivalent, with a major in the intended postgraduate subject;
A Bachelor of Science degree, or close equivalent, followed by a Graduate Diploma of Science or close equivalent in the intended postgraduate subject.

Master of Science - MSc (by thesis only)

Admission to the 120-credit Master of Science (by thesis) is open to students who have been awarded either of the following with a minimum B average:

A Bachelor of Science (Honours) with an endorsement in the same subject as that in which the thesis will be done;
A Postgraduate Diploma in Science with an endorsement in the same subject as that in which the thesis will be done;

The BAcc degree includes a solid foundation of compulsory papers, and it provides some flexibility to choose papers for yourself. It's a specialised degree that can lead to an accountancy career and membership in one or more of the professional accounting organisations.

By the end of the programme, you'll be able to demonstrate self-directed and independent learning. You'll communicate effectively through speech, writing, and multiple forms of media, and you'll be able to measure, analyse and communicate information about economic transactions and events in the global economy.

The BAcc degree will give you an understanding of the legal and regulatory environment that commercial organisations and accounting professionals must work within. You'll be able to identify and evaluate ethical dilemmas and provide logical ways to resolve them.

Finally, you'll learn the concepts and processes needed to protect, validate and attest to the integrity and reliability of accounting information.

There are no special entry requirements for the BAcc programme beyond those that qualify you for study at the University. If you are not confident with your level of competence in English you are recommended to undertake additional study prior to enrolling, or attend a Massey University summer programme in English.

A Bachelor of AgriScience (Agriculture) degree provides the knowledge base and the analytical and management skills to improve the productivity and sustainability of agricultural systems. The major welds an understanding of agribusiness to modern farming practices within the wider context of the economy and society. It provides a sound foundation in agriculture but is sufficiently flexible to allow students to specialise in subjects of particular interest to them.

The agriculture industry is diverse. It includes farming enterprises such as dairy, meat, and wool production; forage production; farm tourism; genetic improvement of plants and animals; and seed production. It also includes biosecurity, as well as service, consultative, and food processing industries.

The Agriculture major will introduce you to a wide range of agricultural enterprises and enable you to gain specialist skills and knowledge in areas of greatest interest to you. You are also able to enter Honours, Postgraduate Diploma, or Masters programmes to further your learning after completing the major. The Agriculture major is structured to ensure that you develop professional skills in written and spoken presentation, computing, and working with professional colleagues and clients.

BAgriScience students will develop a broad overview of the issues confronting New Zealand farmers and agribusiness. Introductory papers in pastures, animals, soils and climate, economics, and business provide the basis for more advanced study later in the programme. In the final year, there is scope for students to focus on specific subjects; however, the aim of the programme is to produce well-rounded agriculture graduates.

The Equine major provides the knowledge base and skills to meet current and emerging opportunities in the equine industries. It is structured to support strong links with equine industries in New Zealand. The major integrates the scientific principles of equine husbandry, agriculture, and agronomy with business skills. You will learn about equine health, nutrition, reproduction, structure, and function. You'll also obtain knowledge of production and management issues, including equine welfare and regulatory issues.

The programme emphasises developing skills for problem solving and analysis of a range of theoretical and practical problems relevant to the equine industry. You will develop skills in written and oral presentation, information technology, innovation, and working with professional colleagues, clients, and employers. Students wanting to specialise can continue to gain postgraduate qualifications.

The AgriScience degree prepares students to apply and integrate scientific. technological, and business knowledge to meet current and emerging opportunities in the primary industries. The degree is designed to enable students to develop excellent career-building skills in communication, information technology, creativity, innovation, problem solving, and analysis, and it prepares them for future leadership roles in the sector that continues to underpin New Zealand's economy.

Entry Requirements

There are no special requirements beyond those that qualify you to study at University. Students beginning their study in AgriScience should have a sound background in Chemistry and Biology at NCEA Level 3, and if possible Mathematics (with Statistics). In addition having NCEA Agriculture and Horticulture at Level 3 is an option that will ensure a smooth transition to University study.

However, if you do not have a background of Chemistry at the Year 13 level then you can take 123.103. Introductory Chemistry, extramurally through Massey University over the summer before your first year of full-time study. This paper will introduce you to basic chemical vocabulary and provide training in the important chemical principles. You do need to already have a university entrance qualification, or to expect to obtain one by sitting NCEA Level 3 at the end of this year. If you are interested in this suggestion get in touch with one of the contact people. Similarly, if you have not done NCEA Level 3 Biology you can take 162.103 Introductory Biology over the summer before you start at University.
