Show More Politics is life, and like life, politics is struggle. The study of politics equips you with the concepts, theories, and facts necessary to make sense of that struggle. Politics is about us: how we make decisions in society and who gets what, when, and how. Politics is also concerned with the conflict of ideas and values, not only at the level of the local community or the nation, but also internationally. More specifically, it has to do with who governs and how and why decisions that affect all of us (such as how much students pay to study at a university) are made.
Students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics will possess knowledge of key themes in political thought and ideology, and an understanding of the relationship between political theory and public policy. The major yields knowledge of the socio-economic processes and interests that structure political life and an understanding of the comparative method in the study of politics. Graduates will understand the institutional and dynamic properties of New Zealand's political system alongside an understanding of regional and international politics. Finally, graduates will gain knowledge of the research methods appropriate to the study of politics. Show More Religions are among the most influential forces shaping the human experience, both in the past and in the present. Without some insight into diverse religious traditions, it is not possible to understand today's world or to prepare adequately for tomorrow's. New Zealand society, politics, education, and the arts continue to be influenced by the Judeo-Christian tradition while increasingly being affected by other traditions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. Globally, religion often functions as the principal source of individual and communal identity, answering questions about meaning and purpose, morality and freedom, responsibility and happiness. Religious Studies investigates religions critically but with empathy, seeking to appreciate the role of religion in society and the perspectives of religious believers. It differs from theology in that it is not grounded in any particular religious tradition but deals even-handedly with religions found throughout the world. Religious Studies complements other subjects such as history, philosophy, classics, politics, anthropology, and literature. Show More Social Anthropology is the study of the relationship between human beings and culture. It gives you a deeper understanding of cultural variation and cultural change, and it allows you to better understand your own culture as one among many possible ways of being human. Social (or cultural) anthropologists seek to understand cultural differences and the many ways people maintain and change culture in response to new social contexts. Social anthropologists bring a comparative approach to the description and analysis of society based on fieldwork that extends across the globe, from hunter-gatherers to industrial nation-states.
