Show More Much of our knowledge of the wider world and ourselves is derived from the various 'screens' popular culture and the mass media use to entertain, inform, and instruct. The social, economic, and cultural importance of the mass media for communication in modern life requires critical analysis and understanding. In a world where it is difficult to escape the impact of the media, Media Studies provides analysis and understanding of the production, consumption, and content of the media industries. The approach is interdisciplinary, drawing on linguistics, textual analysis, cultural studies, aesthetics, politics, ideologies of gender, race, social class, and national identity, and the media industry's codes, conventions, and production techniques. The course includes a practical component as a useful learning supplement. Do people have free will, or does science show that free will is an illusion? Are minds distinct from bodies, or are they the same thing from a different viewpoint? Pretty well everything in philosophy is open to challenge; philosophers ask questions and challenge ordinary assumptions. Philosophy develops thinking strategies to achieve greater clarity and consistency in our thinking. It emphasises the reasons for ideas. You will learn how to understand what you read rather than just remember it, and you'll learn how to engage constructively in debate and think in new ways.
