Show More The Equine major provides the knowledge base and skills to meet current and emerging opportunities in the equine industries. It is structured to support strong links with equine industries in New Zealand. The major integrates the scientific principles of equine husbandry, agriculture, and agronomy with business skills. You will learn about equine health, nutrition, reproduction, structure, and function. You'll also obtain knowledge of production and management issues, including equine welfare and regulatory issues. The programme emphasises developing skills for problem solving and analysis of a range of theoretical and practical problems relevant to the equine industry. You will develop skills in written and oral presentation, information technology, innovation, and working with professional colleagues, clients, and employers. Students wanting to specialise can continue to gain postgraduate qualifications. The AgriScience degree prepares students to apply and integrate scientific. technological, and business knowledge to meet current and emerging opportunities in the primary industries. The degree is designed to enable students to develop excellent career-building skills in communication, information technology, creativity, innovation, problem solving, and analysis, and it prepares them for future leadership roles in the sector that continues to underpin New Zealand's economy. Entry RequirementsThere are no special requirements beyond those that qualify you to study at University. Students beginning their study in AgriScience should have a sound background in Chemistry and Biology at NCEA Level 3, and if possible Mathematics (with Statistics). In addition having NCEA Agriculture and Horticulture at Level 3 is an option that will ensure a smooth transition to University study. However, if you do not have a background of Chemistry at the Year 13 level then you can take 123.103. Introductory Chemistry, extramurally through Massey University over the summer before your first year of full-time study. This paper will introduce you to basic chemical vocabulary and provide training in the important chemical principles. You do need to already have a university entrance qualification, or to expect to obtain one by sitting NCEA Level 3 at the end of this year. Research facilities available for use by equine postgraduate students include the Large Animal Teaching Unit, an equine treadmill and clinical facilities operated by the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences, such as X-ray and computer tomography (CT). In addition, Massey University has very good equine industry contacts, facilitating research with a commercial context. Entry RequirementsAdmission to the Master of AgriScience (240 credits) is open to students who have completed one of the following minimum pre-requisites, at an appropriate level of academic achievement: A Bachelor of AgriScience degree, or close equivalent, with a minimum B average in the majoring 300 level papers A Bachelor of AgriScience degree, or close equivalent, with a major in the intended postgraduate subject; A Bachelor of AgriScience degree, or close equivalent, followed by a Graduate Diploma of Science, a Graduate Diploma in Rural Studies or close equivalent in the intended postgraduate subject.
