The Master of Science in Nursing: Health Care Informatics program is designed for BSN-prepared nurses who want to better understand and apply the data involved in health care to make better decisions through evidenced-based practices. This master‛s program in nursing informatics will assist nurses in the use of patient and health data to achieve better patient outcomes, reduce costs, and optimize operational efficiency.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Nursing: Health Care Informatics program may take on roles within an organization such as automating clinical care, building new operational data systems, training health care workers in the use of computer systems, collecting and analyzing data to improve patient care, etc. Graduates of the nursing informatics program may work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, primary care facilities, doctor's offices, insurance companies, pharmacies, technology suppliers, consulting firms, and more.

The program culminates in a capstone course that provides an opportunity for students to develop an evidence-based practice project proposal that addresses a problem, issue, or concern in professional practice. Students identify a problem amenable to research-based intervention; search literature; propose a solution; and develop a plan to implement the solution, evaluate its outcome(s), and disseminate the findings.

The double degree Master of Nursing and Master of Science in Health Informatics option permits nurses who are interested in health information technology to develop graduate level competencies in both Nursing and Health Information Science. The option is intended to prepare nursing leaders with a background essential for working in the rapidly expanding field of nursing and health informatics. The program is the first of its kind in Canada and it is one of the few programs that provides a comprehensive set of courses and experiential work opportunities in the area of nursing informatics.
Coming from both the Schools of Nursing and Health Information Science, the program offers you a Master of Nursing and a Master of Science in Health Informatics in just three years. Entry requires a bachelor's degree in nursing and professional experience.

Entry Requirements

• You must have earned the equivalent of a "B" average over the last two years (or equivalent of 30 UVic units) of your degree to be considered.
• Practica, non-graded (pass-fail) courses, credit granted on the basis of life or work experience, or credit earned at institutions not recognized by the university will not be used in determining an applicant's grade point average or units completed.
• Any courses used in the calculation of the entering average cannot be used as credit toward a graduate degree program.
• Many academic departments require a higher average for admission to a master's degree.
• A baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree from another country) from a recognized institution
• A grade point average of 5.0 (B) in the work of the last two years (30 units) leading to the bachelor’s degree. Please note that individual academic units often set higher entrance standards.
• Satisfactory assessment reports
• The availability of an appropriate supervisor within the academic unit concerned

1. Grade Point Average on Bachelor's degree of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale from an accredited college or university

2. Official transcripts from your bachelor's institution and any institutions attended since that degree

3. Acceptable score on the GRE, at least 400 verbal, 500 quantitative and a 4.0 on analytical writing

4. Applicants with five or more years of professional work experience may submit a portfolio in lieu of the GRE. The portfolio must include:

- a resume

- a 500- to 600-word essay detailing the reasons for wanting to enter the MPS program and discussing how the program will help the applicant achieve personal and professional goals

- two sealed letters of professional reference

The healthcare administration program adheres to the highest standards established by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the National League for Nursing, and Quality and Safety Education for Nurses. All applicants enrolling into a Master degree program must have evidence of completion of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally or regionally accredited institution.

Applicants that graduated from a foreign post-secondary school must provide proof. A certified copy of credentials or official transcripts translated (if applicable) and evaluated by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credentials Evaluators, Inc. (AICE) must be submitted prior to enrollment.
