Online Nursing Health Informatics Degree :: Accredited Universities

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program is designed for experienced nurses with a BSN degree who are independent learners and who want the convenience and flexibility an online program can offer. The MSN degree requires a minimum of 36 credits consisting of different combinations of courses: core, direct care core, electives, specialty, and Practicum. Two years experience in nursing is recommended and a BSN degree from an accredited program is required.

Three areas of nursing specialty are offered: Nurse Educator, Nursing Informatics and Nursing Administration.

The Nurse Educator program prepares graduates for teaching roles in healthcare and academic settings. The Nursing Informatics program prepares graduates to function as a nursing informatics specialist. The Nursing Administration program prepares graduates for the role of nurse administrator in healthcare settings. A certificate in the selected area of specialty is awarded along with the MSN degree.

In addition to the MSN degree outcomes, the graduate of the Nursing Informatics Program will be able to:

- Integrate knowledge, skills, and scientific findings from nursing science, computer science, information science, and cognitive science in the professional practice of nursing informatics.

- Analyze the concepts of, and relationships between data, information, knowledge and wisdom for implications to nursing practice.

- Demonstrate leadership in the professional practice of nursing informatics through the use of effective communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, and administrative skills.

- Participate at each stage within the health information systems life cycle as a leader and team member.

- Promote the use of healthcare informatics-related education for consumers and healthcare providers.

- Integrate legal, ethical, regulatory, technical, and professional standards into the development and implementation of healthcare related information systems.

- Advance nursing informatics professional practice and values.

Entry Requirements

- All applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a GPA of at least 2.75 is recommended

This program is designed to provide the Registered Nurse with the opportunity to acquire a broad liberal university education with particular emphasis on advanced theoretical and practical knowledge related to nursing informatics, nursing research, primary health care, leadership, management, and family and community health promotion.

Entry Requirements

• To enrol in the post-RN BN program, the following is required:
• Graduation from an approved Registered Nurse (RN) diploma program.
• Regulated (Practicing) Registered Nurse (RN) registration/licensure with a Canadian province or territory. Proof of registration must be submitted at time of application and maintained while completing the program.
• Those students presenting non-Canadian/non-United States degrees for admission and/or possible transfer credit, must obtain a specialized or course-by-course evaluation of post-secondary course work from an international assessment agency, for example, the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).
Given the unique and professional nature of the post-RN BN program, some of the general policies governing academic studies at Athabasca University are superseded by the regulations below.
• RN diplomas from approved institutions will be accepted regardless of the year of graduation.
• Athabasca University will not normally award additional transfer credit for nursing courses/certificates that are more than 7 years old at the time of the request. If evidence of current practice in the content area is submitted, this regulation may be waived.

Students of the RN to MSN Bridge Program who choose the Nursing Administration and Management specialization will study a core curriculum focused on nursing theory, a practical knowledge of legal and ethical issues in healthcare and specialized skills in areas such as finance; healthcare informatics; and strategic management, and planning.

Courses include Modern Organizations and Health Care, Health Care Informatics, Health Care Finance and Economics, Diverse Populations and Health Care.
