What is your vision of social justice? Where do you see yourself making a difference? We offer a program of studies leading to the degree of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) that is fully accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education.
Graduates are employed in a wide range of government and voluntary organizations such as family and children's services, hospitals, women's services, corrections and Indigenous social services.
Our program emphasizes structural, feminist, Indigenous and anti-oppressive analyses. In addition to the comprehensive standard BSW program, we also offer child welfare, Indigenous, and Indigenous child welfare specializations.

Entry Requirements

• Completion of a minimum of the first two years (30 units) of an undergraduate program at UVic, with an overall average of at least 3.5 (on the UVic 9.0 point scale) or better, or the equivalent at another university or community college on the last 12 units of university-transfer course work
• Within the required 30 units, completion of SOCW 200A and 200B or their equivalents. 24 units should be completed from within general education liberal arts subject areas.
• For the May entry point only, applicants will be considered for admission with 27 units of credit in order to then complete Socw 200A and 200B in this session.
Academic Writing Requirement
• Successful completion of a 1.5 unit AWR-designated course (ENGL 135, 146, 147, ENGR 110).
• One of the following qualifications.
- A score of at least 86% on the B.C. English 12 Provincial Examination, or English 12 First Peoples Provincial Examination, within the three years immediately prior to admission.
- A final grade of at least 86% in an approved English 12 equivalent course from other Canadian provinces within the three years immediately prior to admission.

Our MSW programs provide the learner multiple opportunities to examine the challenges, contributions, constraints, and contexts for critical social work practice. Congruent with the School's Mission Statement, critical social work practice is rooted in a vision of social justice. The program nurtures accountable and oppositional education, research, and practice in the advancement of decolonization, Indigenous-focused, anti-racist, feminist and queer (among other) social justice struggles. The program does not offer a clinical focus.

Entry Requirements

• Applicants for the MSW Advanced program must have a BSW degree from an accredited institution and a minimum of two years of full-time successful practice in one or more human service settings. Relevant experience for paid or unpaid work experience in human services can include, but is not limited to: social services, health, education, housing, income and economic development, justice and public safety, community organization and/or community development and/or advocacy work. Relevant human service work experience can include direct service to people that enhances people’s development and well-being or the planning, organization, development and administration of human service programs. Practicum experience is NOT included in calculating human service experience.

Social economy organizations of all kinds need strong and resourceful leaders like never before.
Designed with working professionals in mind, the Master of Arts in Community Development (MACD) will build and develop your capacity to become a successful leader in the civil society and social economy, whether you work or volunteer in non-profit, co-operative or community economic development organizations either locally or internationally. Throughout the program, you will apply new skills and knowledge to an ongoing research project for a client in the community development sector.

The double degree Master of Nursing and Master of Science in Health Informatics option permits nurses who are interested in health information technology to develop graduate level competencies in both Nursing and Health Information Science. The option is intended to prepare nursing leaders with a background essential for working in the rapidly expanding field of nursing and health informatics. The program is the first of its kind in Canada and it is one of the few programs that provides a comprehensive set of courses and experiential work opportunities in the area of nursing informatics.
