Show More The aim of this MSc is to promote awareness of psychosocial aspects within any field of humanitarian work, whether in the UK or overseas. The programme aims to raise awareness of the different contexts that affect psychosocial well-being and access to appropriate services. The programme also aims to introduce students to different types of consultation, in recognition that most of the services provided through humanitarian agencies are delivered in response to crises or emergencies, are time limited and rely on the engagement of local populations. Consultation skills include those of engagement, development of trust, facilitation, enabling and the identification of a process by which information can be accessed, shared and evaluated. The focus of psychosocial consultation for this programme is the collaboration with different groups to facilitate understanding of different psychosocial needs. Groups include beneficiaries; aid workers; volunteers; staff; managers; partner organisations and stakeholders, all of whom require safety, security and good psychosocial support in order to facilitate the successful completion and evaluation of projects in the UK and overseas. The content of the programme is dictated by the overall aim which is to produce graduates capable of making successful, responsible and useful contributions in the humanitarian field or the third sector through greater awareness of the implications of different contexts and using psychosocial consultation. The skills and knowledge base developed through successful completion of the programme will also be beneficial to employers in the health and social care sectors. Ps... Show More This is a cross disciplinary programme that assumes that to understand the contemporary human world we have to use ideas from psychology, psychoanalysis, sociology, literature, history and cultural studies. Psychosocial Studies is the academic study of the relationship between individuals and their social worlds. Further, the field of inquiry is driven by the belief that individuals have to be understood as psychologically complex, and that the interactions and entwinement between that psychological complexity and the social world need to be grasped. The nature of the relationship between the psyche and the social, and the tools of investigation remain contested and uncertain. The strength of debate is perhaps not surprising as some of the issues are fundamental ones concerning the nature of humanity and they are often deeply political in their implications: Are human beings best understood as products of biology and evolution, who have ‘essential’ instincts that might be tamed or liberated within different social contexts? Or are we beings whose characteristics need to be understood as products of more distinctly human cultural processes that are subject to historical shifts?
