Show More Materials Science and technology is a challenging inter disciplinary course offering considerable variety and career opportunities across a wide range of industry sectors. The course has been designed to meet the requirements of industry and allow progression towards professional chartered status. The course content encompasses all aspects of materials; their selection, manufacture, testing, assembly and environmental impact both during production and at the end of life. Through a careful balance of lectures, practicals and case studies, students develop a thorough understanding of the properties and capabilities of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites, which can then be applied to a wide range of industrial contexts including aerospace, automotive, power generation and distribution, IT and manufacturing amongst many others. Project work forms an important part of this course, working individually and in groups, it prepares students for the workplace by developing crucial transferable skills. The 60 credit MSc project is of great significance, equivalent to one third of the total course marks. Its main objective is to provide training in techniques that are essential for research and development work and problem solving in industry. Entry RequirementsFull time candidates will usually require a good first degree (BEng or BSc) or equivalent in a science or engineering subject to register for an MSc course. Part time students working in industry with relevant experience may be accepted with an HND or equivalent and would usually begin at certificate level and then, with successful progress, continue to work towards the MSc. All applicants for admission to postgraduate taught programmes must have an acceptable qualification in English language before they can be admitted to any taught postgraduate programme. Applicants should include all possible information about their qualifications when applying. Transcripts are particularly important and so are referees' reports, particularly for international and industrially sponsored part time students. Other Fees |

Show More This is the distance learning version of the full time MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology. By using the same course materials distance learning students are able to achieve the same outcomes as the full-time MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology. We have developed new ways of learning, which offer students flexibility in place, pace and mode to meet the demand from people wanting this highly sought after qualification but who cannot attend traditional university classes. The objectives of the course are to provide an advanced technical level of education in a range of renewable energy technologies including solar, wind, biomass and water with an emphasis on integration into electricity networks in developed and developing countries. Furthermore, policy and environmental issues are examined to contextualise the need for renewable energy. The project dissertation which is taken towards the end of study enables students to gain and develop in-depth research and problem solving skills, often in conjunction with an industrial partner. By the end of the course, our renewable energy MSc graduates, who are in high demand, will have gained a comprehensive understanding of renewable energy technologies and developed a range of important transferable skills on completion of the course All of our renewable energy MSc Modules consist of a series of Study Units, each covering a specific subject area (see programme modules). Instead of face-to-face lectures and tutorials, the main learning routes for distance learning students are via the University’s virtual learning environment (LEARN). The learning resources for each Study Unit include:
On line study materials
