Show MoreBy focusing on such areas of Philosophy the MA Philosophy services the needs of graduates who wish to build upon their first degree in Philosophy or a cognate discipline, e.g. as preparation for a research degree. The programme also meets the needs of teachers of A-level Philosophy, in that its modules overlap core parts of the A-level Philosophy curriculum, such as Philosophy of Religion, Ethics, and History of Philosophy (covered in the module The Philosophy of Philosophy). However the MA Philosophy is sufficiently broad in extent to be also suitable for anyone who is looking to broaden their acquaintance with, and understanding of, philosophy as it is practiced in the English speaking world today. Candidates will be able to choose from a range of modules covering a variety of different themes and specialist areas. The modules are built around the research specialisms of our academic staff all of whom are research active and regularly publish their thoughts and ideas. The MA Applied Philosophy is a modular programme. In part I, students take six 20-credit modules. In part II, students are required to write a dissertation. Entry RequirementsThe normal minimum requirement for admission is a Bachelor’s degree, with good II.1 honours, or equivalent. However as part of an inclusive approach to learning we encourage students from non traditional entry points or without recognised educational backgrounds but who have an equivalent and appropriate professional qualification or significant relevant professional experience to apply. In such cases the programme leader may ask for a telephone/ skype conversation or request evidence in the form of a piece of work, report, analysis of some sort to satisfy themselves that each student is able to fulfil their potential on the course. Show More Health is now widely recognized as a universal human right, enshrined in the WHO Constitution; both national and international policies highlight the necessity of social and cultural factors to promote health and wellbeing. At the same time, tightened regimes of fiscal rectitude necessitate difficult decisions about the distribution of scarce resources for health care, and discourse has often shifted away from collective health promotion to focus on individual rights and responsibilities. For instance, the Wales Department of Health’s recent strategy document Together for Health (2011) has highlighted issues of inequality, rising patient expectations, and the need to increase health and wellbeing in the population in the face of limited staffing and funding resources. Thus, there exists a real need for greater critical understanding of the social and cultural determinants of health, ethical health care and health policy decision-making, and the complex interactions between individuals and the societies that they live in. The MA in Health, Ethics and Society will develop these understandings. Entry RequirementsThe normal minimum requirement for admission is a Bachelor’s degree, with good II.1 honours, or equivalent. Show More The programme of study offers students a unique opportunity to explore a range of Heritage issues. It combines broadly based compulsory modules with two distinct and specialised optional pathways, in Cultural Heritageand Museums and Archives. The Cultural Heritage pathway is composed of two modules, which focus upon the notion of heritage as cultural practice and thus explore questions such as where does heritage come from, how is it made, what does it do, and how does it relate to the past and present, what is the relationship between heritage and the construction of identity, and what is the role of landscape, architecture and monuments in determining and embedding heritage. The second pathway on Museums and Archives is also composed of two modules which explore many of the issues surrounding the management, conservation, practice and legislation surrounding the operation of museums and archives. The programme also encourages students to undertake a work placement at a museum, or heritage site of their choice, while those on the Lampeter campus can undertake this in the Roderic Bowen Research Centre. Students are therefore equipped with a broad understanding and appreciation of the field of Heritage in addition to a more concentrated and specialist knowledge on a particular strand. Running through all these modules is a focus upon the practice based, employability side of Heritage. This is then extended further into a discreet work placement module. Here students enter the work place, taking with them the knowledge and understanding from the course which they apply in a practical, hands-on setting.
