If you are already licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the United States, you can obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree completely online through Fort Hays State University. Graduating with a BSN degree opens doors to more and better career options and additional management responsibilities. The BSN also prepares you for graduate nursing study. The RN-to-BSN degree program is designed to be flexible enough to meet your busy schedule as a working professional. With this program, you can receive credit for prior educational experience, attend the clinical course in your local area, and finish in one year after you meet all prerequisite and general education requirements. FHSU is a leader in nursing education and offers a program that is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education(CCNE). CCNE is a national, autonomous accreditation agency, officially recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education, which ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate and graduate education programs.

Entry Requirements

Prospective students must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN) from an accredited institution of higher learning. R.N.s with a Bachelor's degree in a nursing-related field will be required to take a bridge course

tudents will be eligible for admission if they have achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale and possess a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state in which they work. The admissions committee reserves the right to interview applicants who have less than a 3.0 GPA.

The GRE is not required for this program.

International Applicants

Applicants whose native language is not English or who are not citizens of countries where English is an official language must submit official test scores for either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The minimum required score for the TOEFL is:
Internet-Based Test: 100 or above
Paper-Based Test: 600 or above

The minimum required score for the IELTS is:
An overall band score of 7.0
Individual Band Scores of 6.0 or above

The TOEFL/IELTS requirement may be waived for applicants who hold a degree from an accredited college or university in a country in which English is the official language and also the language of instruction at the institution.

Achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on all course work attempted. Provisional admission with a 2.70-3.0 is available; students admitted on provisional status must earn a minimum of “B” grade in the first 6 hours of nursing courses attempted;

Completed all pre-requisite courses including: 12 hours Area D lab science courses, Area A math course, and Area F. Applicants must have no more than 10 hours of core courses left to complete;

Submitted a completed RN-BSN/RN-MSN online application to the School of Nursing, by the posted deadline: April 1st for Fall semester, or October 1st for Spring semester. Applications submitted after the posted deadline will be automatically processed for the following next semester;

Students may take two nursing courses, NURS 3139 and NURS 4132, without being admitted to the RN-BSN Program, with permission from the RN-BSN Program Director.

No nursing entrance exam is required.

The RN to BSN program is designed for registered nurses with an associate's degree or diploma in nursing who are looking to further their education. With significant changes in the delivery of health care in the United States today, the need for lifelong learning and professional renewal has never been more important. As discussed in the 2010 IOM Future of Nursing report, nursing is at the forefront of new delivery methods to address complex needs along the continuum of care. In support of many of these changes, hospitals are now pursuing Magnet® status and seeking nurses prepared with a BSN.

The format and courses of the regionally accredited program are tailored to meet the needs of the adult learner RN, and to maximize the strengths that the working RN possesses. Courses are taught by practicing nurses and experts in their respective fields who share knowledge and experience in areas of clinical patient care, health care management, and professional nursing practice and leadership.

Students will apply concepts, theories, and research in the RN's clinical practice. Both the science and art of nursing are integral components of the program and are woven throughout. Graduates of the program are prepared to become leaders in the nursing profession, filling roles such as a charge nurse, nurse manager, unit supervisor, division nurse leader, director of nursing for a facility, or patient educator. Nurses with BSNs are found in a variety of settings including hospitals, ambulatory care centers, health service organizations, community care settings, long-term and rehabilitative settings, in case management as well as in the home.

GCU‛s RN to BSN program focuses on the application of clinical reasoning, research, evidence based practice, collaboration and leadership. Students in this program will explore effective communication strategies demonstrated through inter-professional practices, critical thinking, ethical decision making, spirituality in health care, nursing management and servant leadership. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of concepts through relevant experiential learning and practice experiences that foster opportunities in disease prevention, quality improvement, information management and leadership development; all of which are aligned to the Baccalaureate Essentials requirements determined by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing

High School Transcripts - Applicants are required to submit official high school transcripts with a cumulative, unweighted grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or above.
Applicants holding their GED should refer to the University Policy Handbook for separate requirements.

Transferring from Another College, University or Program

Second Bachelor's Degree

Applicants who have already earned a bachelor's degree from GCU or another institution but are interested in pursuing a second bachelor's degree may be accepted to the university if they meet the minimum admission standard of an unweighted GPA of 2.0 or above.
