An undergraduate degree, with an excellent or very good classification (equivalent to first or upper second class honours in the UK), in the field of clinical and allied health sciences, informatics, health policy, psychology, allied health sciences or a relevant related subject.

An undergraduate degree (e.g. bachelor) which is considered at least comparable to a UK second class honours degree, from an institution acceptable to the University, in one of the following subjects (and a minimum of one year’s relevant work experience): Water and Sanitation, Development Studies, Human Rights, Environmental Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, Demography, Politics, Political Science, International Relations, International Politics or Policy Studies.

An undergraduate degree not listed above may still be considered provided this has been awarded in a subject deemed appropriate to the course and is at least comparable to a UK second class honours degree, from an institution acceptable to the University (and a minimum of one year’s relevant work experience).

Applicants who do not satisfy the above requirements may still be admitted at the discretion of the University on the basis of their academic qualifications, work experience and references.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to have a baccalaureate degree from an institution of higher learning accredited or accepted as accredited in the United States, with a cumulative grade point of 2.5 or better. Students who do not meet the cumulative grade point standard may be conditionally accepted and required to take specific introductory course work and complete it with a grade of 3.0 or better, prior to consideration of formal acceptance.

Applicants are required to have a minimum of two years of relevant and substantive experience in a health related field; applicants without this experience must submit a letter explaining their interest and motivation for applying to the program. The Master of Health and International Development is a joint venture between the Centre for Development Studies and the Discipline of Public Health, School of Medicine, Flinders University. It has been designed to provide students with an understanding of comprehensive primary health care as it applies in the developing world in relation to an understanding of the philosophical, theoretical and empirical issues of international development.

This two year, 72 credit units course provides critical insights into the social, political and cultural processes and the institutional contexts that shape health and development issues, research, policy and practice. It aims to develop highly skilled specialists to better plan, develop, manage and evaluate and implement health initiatives and programs.

The course strives to offer maximum flexibility and most topics are offered both externally and internally. The course has five core topics including:

Development Problems, Policies and Programs,
Social Determinants of Health and Well Being,
Primary Health Care Practice in Developing Countries,
Public Health Practice Development, and
either Gender Analysis or Gender Mainstreaming.

It also offers a wide range of selection for elective topics.
