CSU's Bachelor of Information Studies (Honours) is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop expertise in research methods and data analysis, study in depth a topic in the field of information studies which is of particular interest to them, and complete a dissertation in their field of interest.

About the course

The course prepares graduates for entry to higher degree research courses and provides them with the necessary research skills, knowledge and attitudes to achieve this goal. Students will develop an advanced level of knowledge in their chosen area of specialisation and further develop their verbal and written skills for advancement to higher level studies and research.

While the course has a distinct structure, it also has the flexibility to meet the differing needs of students wishing to specialise in different areas. Students may commence studies at the beginning of the academic year or in mid-year subject to places being available. Our students select from full-time and part-time study options to fit in with work and lifestyle commitments. The Honours course typically includes a substantial research project.

As a student of the course, you will first study core aspects of the computing discipline such as databases, data communications, systems analysis and design, information security and project management. You then follow a study pathway that suits your interest – choose to specialise in Network Engineering, Software Design, Systems Administration, Online Systems, IT Management, or Systems Analysis.

International students may study the Bachelor of Information Technology through CSU regional campuses* or the CSU Study Centre Sydney or Melbourne. An intake in Session 3 is available for Study Centres only.

Entry Requirements

Students applying for entry to the Bachelor of Information Technology should have (1) of the following:

NSW HSC ATAR with appropriate ATAR (typically 65 or greater)

Completion of the NSW HSC (or equivalent) with strong performances in subjects in the Information Technology area

Successful completion of at least two appropriate standard Information Technology university-level subjects

For recent school leavers, a report from the school principal, equivalent to that used in the Principals' Report Entry Program (PREP), recommending the applicant as well-suited for university study

Appropriate professional certifications

Two years' relevant professional information technology work experience

A completed AQF Certificate III (or above) in Information Technology or a related area.

CSU's Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) is your stepping stone into the exciting world of research in computing and information technology (IT). If you are a high achieving student who has completed a bachelor degree in computing, information technology or related discipline and wish to advance your knowledge and problem solving skills through research training, this may be the right course for you.

The Honours program prepares graduates for entry into higher degree by research programs and provides them with the necessary research skills, knowledge and attitudes to achieve this goal. Students will have the opportunity to learn advanced computational approaches and IT techniques used in data and information processing, management and analysis.

Honours students will typically conduct a substantial research project under close supervision of one or more academic supervisors. While the course has a distinct structure, it also has the flexibility to meet the differing needs of students wishing to specialise in different areas.
Most Honours students are sponsored by a scholarship from the Faculty and/or the University.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have obtained a bachelor degree in Information Technology or related discipline from an Australian or approved overseas university. Students with a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or other equivalent degree with a computing major or specialisation will also be considered.

Applicants should have completed their undergraduate degree with a high Grade Point Average, usually with grades of Credit or above. Only in exceptional circumstances will this requirement be waived, and this waiver must have the approval of the Executive Dean.

CSU's Bachelor of Information Technology TAFE integrated programs are designed with flexibility in mind, and equips graduates with the skills and attributes required to be effective and efficient information technology professionals.

TAFE NSW Riverina Institute and Charles Sturt University have integrated the Diploma of Information Technology (Networking) (ICA504) and Bachelor of Information Technology degree. The program is offered through Riverina Institute's Albury and Wagga Wagga Campuses.
