The career opportunities for our graduates are broad and include employment in public and academic libraries; research, government and corporate information centres; and the cultural heritage sector.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement is an undergraduate degree or equivalent in any discipline. Applicants should also have a basic knowledge and understanding of using personal computers and the internet.

Successful applicants must have substantial access to the internet and a computer during the period they are enrolled in the course in order to complete course requirements.

Master of Information Studies applicants who have a professionally recognised Graduate Diploma in the field of library science or information management may be eligible for a maximum credit of 64 points.

CSU's Bachelor of Information Studies (Honours) is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop expertise in research methods and data analysis, study in depth a topic in the field of information studies which is of particular interest to them, and complete a dissertation in their field of interest.

About the course

The course prepares graduates for entry to higher degree research courses and provides them with the necessary research skills, knowledge and attitudes to achieve this goal. Students will develop an advanced level of knowledge in their chosen area of specialisation and further develop their verbal and written skills for advancement to higher level studies and research.

While the course has a distinct structure, it also has the flexibility to meet the differing needs of students wishing to specialise in different areas. Students may commence studies at the beginning of the academic year or in mid-year subject to places being available. Our students select from full-time and part-time study options to fit in with work and lifestyle commitments. The Honours course typically includes a substantial research project.

To be eligible for the Bachelor of Information Studies (Honours), applicants must have completed a bachelor degree in Information Studies at credit level or better.

Students must take four core courses from among the areas of professional foundations, information organization, policy, research methods, user needs assessment, and management for career-planning purposes, and choose additional courses either from one or more areas of specialization or by designing an individualized program of study that best meets their career goals. Courses are offered in three broad concentrations: information architecture and technology, information needs and services, and youth information needs and services. The current areas of specialization include general librarianship, information organization, leadership and management, reference and instruction, school media, technology and networking, Web design, and youth services. Additional specializations are developed according to professional needs.

The Specialist degree is a post-master's degree designed for students who are interested in gaining knowledge in new areas within the field of information studies. The focus of the program is to improve and develop new skills and additional competencies in the field. The program is planned cooperatively with faculty advisers who will help tailor the program to meet the student's professional needs. The Specialist degree requires successful completion of thirty semester hours beyond the MS/MA degree and an optional culminating paper or project at the completion of the program.

Entry Requirements

Requirements include a minimum 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, a Master's degree from an accredited college/university, and official test results from a nationally standardized graduate admission test (such as the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination or GRE), indicating at least 150 on each of the verbal and quantitative portions of the test.
