Learning about History means learning about change in the world and in ourselves. History is unavoidable, and having a better understanding of history makes us more broadminded as people and citizens.

History is a topic as large as our recorded past. Our cultural heritages, literatures, arts, religions, politics, economics, social behaviours, buildings, and landscapes all derive from past influences.

The breadth of papers offered allows you to explore your own particular interests. Examples of available topics include the history of New Zealand and the Pacific, Britain/Europe, pre-industrial societies, colonisation, social and political history, or contemporary history.

The Japanese major equips students with advanced language skills in spoken and written Japanese, coupled with a solid understanding of the cultural background underpinning this complex and powerful society.

With your major in Japanese, you can expect to acquire competence equivalent to at least Level Two of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (Nihongo Noryoku Shiken). Each language paper builds upon the previous one.

Mathematics draws much of its following and strength from the ability to solve problems in a wide variety of applications, including the other sciences, engineering, commerce, and industry. Not one area of human endeavour has been untouched by the process of quantification and analysis.

You will develop a wide variety of skills and techniques, especially in calculus and algebra. You will learn to formulate, solve, restate, resolve, and interpret problems. To complement the analytical skills, you are encouraged to gain knowledge of computational simulation techniques on computers.
