Online Child Youth Care Studies Degree :: Accredited Universities

The programme is aimed at students with an interest in developing positive strategies for affirming and developing the professional identity of child and youth care practice. It draws from a variety of disciplines and approaches including child and youth care, social pedagogy, sociology, psychology, health, education, social work, and social policy.

Students will develop theoretically informed, practice-based understanding of issues related to the social, political and cultural contexts of children and youth. The programme considers and examines theoretical and policy contexts, child development in the lifespace, management and leadership, intervention methods, critical reflection, relational practice, and research methods.

The role of the state, non-governmental agencies and private organisations in the provision of child welfare services will be examined along with the internationalisation of child welfare policy through developments such as UNCRC.

The course is of modular design and assessment is through a practice-based portfolio. Students are expected to complete six taught modules over a 16-month period. A further eight months is allotted for completion of a practice-based dissertation. Students therefore complete the Masters award in two years.

The programme will be delivered entirely online with no attendance requirement. Modules involve a range of individual and group tasks in addition to live online sessions where the student group will participate in an online seminar.

A first degree or equivalent qualifications and experience are required. Students will also require sufficient access to child care settings through which they can evidence practice requirements. However, these requirements are broad enough to allow those in external management, supervisory and training positions to do so.

- Credit hours earned from regionally accredited schools will automatically be evaluated for transfer hours as part of the formal application process. In order for a class to be eligible for transfer, a grade of C or better must have been achieved. (A grade of C- will not be considered for transfer credit.)

- Attended for three consecutive years and graduation from an accredited or state-approved mainland U.S. high school where English is the language of instruction

- Successful completion of a total of 20 semester hours at a regionally accredited, mainland U.S. university or college where English is the language of instruction, including three semester hours of English that qualify as transfer credit for Florida Tech’s Composition and Rhetoric (COM 1101) course

- Successful completion of a NASFA-recognized ESL program

This MA course offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of childhood and youth underpinned by a commitment to integrated practice. This qualification is designed for graduates with a background in childhood and youth studies, sociology, health and social care, anthropology, psychology or education. It would suit those already working with children and young people and wish to enhance their knowledge as well as those who wish to enter this field. You study two compulsory 60-credit modules and gain the final 60 credits either from appropriate credit transfer or by taking 60 credits from a choice of optional modules.

The first 60-credit compulsory module is Children and young people’s worlds: frameworks for integrated practice (E807). This module is in two parts, a theoretically based exploration of aspects of children and young people’s worlds - the family; the law; children’s rights; politicised childhoods; participation and voice issues; consumerist childhoods; education; ethnicity and religion; child criminology; child sexuality; and multi-cultural childhoods – examined within a worldwide context where each topic has a featured case study linking theory to practice. The second part of the module is an extended piece of writing (7000 words) and you will choose either a small research project around a topic relevant to the module or a literature review. The second compulsory module is Critical practice with children and young people (K802). In this module you will explore the changing policy, organisational, personal and professional contexts in which work with children and young people takes place. Multi-agency working and inter-professional practice will have a central focus. The module aims to equip you with the critical tools to analyse policy and to reflect on your own practice, in ways that enable you to develop professionally and meet the diverse and changing needs of children and young people.

You will require a bachelors degree (or equivalent) in any discipline relevant to children and young people to study for this qualification. Applicants who do not hold a degree (or equivalent), but have significant professional experience of at least three years in a related area may be eligible for consideration. You should include evidence of this experience in the supplementary information we ask you to provide when you register for your first module.
