Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold an honours degree from a UK University, or any other equivalent qualification. They must also have either IELTS minimum score 6.0 or equivalent if English is not their first language. Alternatively if they do not hold a degree, they should have significant appropriate experience and be able to provide evidence of ability to undertake the course successfully and benefit from it. They are expected to have regular contact with older people with mental health problems and should be employed within the healthcare or welfare sectors or caring for older people with mental health problems.

It is a large and diverse industry involving a wide variety of products and services all over the globe. Horticultural products and services provide a large portion of our daily diet and an endless source of beauty and enrichment in our homes and communities, and through our leisure activities.

BAgriScience (Horticulture) students will develop a broad overview of the current and emerging issues confronting horticulturists and the operators and owners of allied firms. Introductory papers in horticulture, plant biology, soils and climate, economics and business, and pests and diseases provide the basis for more advanced study later in the programme. In the final year, you can elect to focus to some extent; however, the aim of the programme is to produce well-rounded horticulturists.

The Horticulture major provides a learning experience covering all disciplines that constitute the integrative nature of horticulture. A wide range of other papers is also available, providing flexibility and choice for students who want to access knowledge on topics as diverse as specific crops, integrated pest and disease management, hydroponics, supply chain management, and business. However, it is preferable that you have credit for NCEA Level 3 Biology or Science, Chemistry, Modelling and Statistics, plus English and Maths. Bioscience’ is a diverse, inter-disciplinary and topical subject which contributes much to health and wealth worldwide. Our course focuses on the application of human and molecular biology to offer solutions and opportunities within the biomedical science and food professions. Our course extends and enhances your bioscience knowledge and understanding, and develops your research and innovation, and enterprise skills, which not only benefits your career advancement but also your employer. Our fully online delivery offers you flexible learning, and progression at a study pace which best suits you. Successful completion of our course also allows you to progress to higher degrees (taught and research) at universities around the world.

Our course is not designed for school leavers but for those in the work place, locally and internationally, who need flexible learning. We need to be able to accredit you for your prior learning to the value of 120 credit points at level 4 and 80 to 120 credit points at level 5. This includes BSc Hons students who did not complete their degree, sub degree graduates and even higher degree graduates looking to update their biosciences.

Most students enter to complete 120 credit points at level 6, over two academic years, but there are opportunities to fast track or slow track your studies. Those students entering the course via 1 or 2 bridging level 5 modules, require 1 or 2 additional semesters.

The internal coherence of the educational aims of the course and its associated learning outcomes across the particular fields of applications of biology (human and molecular), within an environment which promotes research, innovation and enterprise, demand that all modules (120 credits at level 6) are compulsory. This course provides opportunities for students to:

The terms ergonomics and human factors are used interchangeably to describe the theory and practice of learning about human characteristics and capabilities and then using that understanding to improve people's interaction with the things they use and with the environments in which they do so. Ergonomics involves applying scientific information concerning humans to the design of objects, systems and environments for human use. It aims to design objects, systems and tasks in such a way as to improve human safety, health, comfort and performance. This course has been designed by leading researchers in the field of ergonomics and will give you the skills and experience to apply ergonomics in real world settings. Students receive high levels of support from tutors throughout the course and distance learning means that students have the flexibility to study when and where it suits them.

The programme is designed to give graduates the human factors/ergonomics experience required in a wide range of manufacturing, service and process industries, enforcement agencies such as Local Authorities and the health service, as well as a grounding for a career in research.
