Show More Horticulture combines art, science, and business in the production, marketing, use, and improvement of fruits, flowers, vegetables, and ornamental plants. It is a large and diverse industry involving a wide variety of products and services all over the globe. Horticultural products and services provide a large portion of our daily diet and an endless source of beauty and enrichment in our homes and communities, and through our leisure activities. BAgriScience (Horticulture) students will develop a broad overview of the current and emerging issues confronting horticulturists and the operators and owners of allied firms. Introductory papers in horticulture, plant biology, soils and climate, economics and business, and pests and diseases provide the basis for more advanced study later in the programme. In the final year, you can elect to focus to some extent; however, the aim of the programme is to produce well-rounded horticulturists. The Horticulture major provides a learning experience covering all disciplines that constitute the integrative nature of horticulture. A wide range of other papers is also available, providing flexibility and choice for students who want to access knowledge on topics as diverse as specific crops, integrated pest and disease management, hydroponics, supply chain management, and business. Opportunities exist to develop your particular interest and expertise in any of the above disciplines, enabling you to progress to postgraduate study and gain specialist training to suit your future needs. The flexibility and choices available create opportunities to forge your own future career pathway in this exciting and growing industry. Entry RequirementsThere are no special requirements beyond those that qualify you to study at University. However, it is preferable that you have credit for NCEA Level 3 Biology or Science, Chemistry, Modelling and Statistics, plus English and Maths. Taking these subjects will help ensure a smooth transition to University study.
