There is plenty of work for graduates in the Information Technology and Communication (ICT) industry, with around 2000 job vacancies on offer in New Zealand at any given time. Most undergraduate papers in the major focus on computer programming - the design and creation of software applications (known as "apps") that enable computers to be used in all areas of human endeavour. Students learn: Several programming languages such as Java, C++ and Python. How to write computer programs and how to apply them in various areas including operating systems, networks and web-based systems. No prior programming skills are required although students need a quick and logical mind to succeed in this field. Computer science includes activities and pursuits such as artificial intelligence, speech recognition, computer graphics, image processing, simulations and numeric processing, robotics and data communications. The major in computer science can be taken as a single major, or together with the major in Information Technology (double major), or with a minor in any subject that has a defined minor. Massey’s computer science major equips graduates with the technical and programming skills needed in the 21st century software-based industry society.
