Unlike the Bachelor of Education, which is a professional degree, the BA in Education deals with the academic study of Education. It evaluates the content and processes, institutions, contexts, and the setting through which people learn to be members of their societies and cultures. The Education major provides a wide variety of papers covering the main disciplinary approaches to the study of educational policies and practices. Two papers, An Introduction to Social and Cultural Studies in Education and Human Development I, are compulsory for a major in Education. These two papers form the basis for advanced study in education in the areas of educational history, philosophy, psychology, advanced studies in human development, and education research methods. The Master in Counselling provides a professional qualification and real-life counselling experience for people who may not be practising as psychologists or social workers. The program aims to provide you with: advanced knowledge about major counselling approaches, training in counselling practice an understanding of ethical and professional issues relating to the counselling profession. An integral component of the program is the supervised professional placement which includes contact and non-contact hours. You will spend the equivalent of 35 days undertaking professional placement. You normally start your placement in second semester, although you may choose to begin your non-contact hours in first semester. Non-contact hours includes any duty associated with the placement centre that is not counselling. Examples include: administrative duties, observation of groups or activities, writing case notes, research into a particular case or attending meetings.
