Online Nursing Health Degree :: Accredited Universities

The double degree Master of Nursing and Master of Science in Health Informatics option permits nurses who are interested in health information technology to develop graduate level competencies in both Nursing and Health Information Science. The option is intended to prepare nursing leaders with a background essential for working in the rapidly expanding field of nursing and health informatics. The program is the first of its kind in Canada and it is one of the few programs that provides a comprehensive set of courses and experiential work opportunities in the area of nursing informatics.
Coming from both the Schools of Nursing and Health Information Science, the program offers you a Master of Nursing and a Master of Science in Health Informatics in just three years. Entry requires a bachelor's degree in nursing and professional experience.

Entry Requirements

• You must have earned the equivalent of a "B" average over the last two years (or equivalent of 30 UVic units) of your degree to be considered.
• Practica, non-graded (pass-fail) courses, credit granted on the basis of life or work experience, or credit earned at institutions not recognized by the university will not be used in determining an applicant's grade point average or units completed.
• Any courses used in the calculation of the entering average cannot be used as credit toward a graduate degree program.
• Many academic departments require a higher average for admission to a master's degree.
• A baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree from another country) from a recognized institution
• A grade point average of 5.0 (B) in the work of the last two years (30 units) leading to the bachelor’s degree. Please note that individual academic units often set higher entrance standards.
• Satisfactory assessment reports
• The availability of an appropriate supervisor within the academic unit concerned
• The availability of adequate space and facilities within the academic unit concerned.

Admission to the Registered Nurse to Master in Nursing degree program is open to Registered Nurses who have successfully completed an associate degree or diploma nursing program. This degree is designed for students whose highest earned degree is the associate degree or diploma.

The Master of Science in Nursing with an Emphasis in Nursing Leadership in Health Care Systems prepares nurses for leadership roles in today's rapidly changing health care delivery systems. This program was designed for BSN-prepared registered nurses who are looking to advance their career and move into a management role. Graduates of the nurse leadership master‛s degree program may seek positions such as a charge nurse, director of nursing, chief nursing officer, or a vice president of nursing services. With a focus on nursing leadership in health care systems, this program prepares students to lead and manage a team of health care providers, specifically including areas of managing a budget, staffing challenges and constraints, conflict resolution and change management.

The nurse leadership master‛s program consists of graduate nursing core courses and leadership courses taken with the Master of Science Leadership (M.S.L.) program. From the graduate nursing core courses, students gain the knowledge, values, and skills needed for advanced generalist practice in an evolving health care system. The nursing portion of the program focuses on the critical analysis of nursing and health care research as well as ethics, policy and finance in health care. The leadership portion of the program provides an overview of leadership styles and the functioning of organizations with an emphasis on communication skills required to establish and maintain effective relationships. Leadership topics include servant leadership, business leadership models and theories, and the exploration of the behavioral forces and relationships that influence organizational effectiveness and change.

This program includes both a capstone class and a practicum. The nurse leadership capstone class provides an opportunity for students to develop an evidence-based practice project proposal that addresses a problem, issue, or concern in professional practice. Students identify a problem amenable to research-based intervention; search literature; propose a solution; and develop a plan to implement the solution, evaluate its outcome(s), and disseminate the findings. The practicum promotes the synthesis and application of knowledge and skills from the nursing core course and the leadership courses. Students identify a mentor and develop a relationship through which they examine the connection between theory and practice.
