The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree program is a collaborative degree offering of South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota. The M.P.H. degree is the most widely recognized professional credential for leadership and practice in public health. As outlined by the Council on Education for Public Health, which accredits M.P.H. programs, the M.P.H. curriculum covers the five core areas of public health education:

Biostatistics
Epidemiology
Health Services Administration
Social and Behavioral Sciences
Environmental Health

Indiana State University offers the master of science (M.S.) in health sciences with a concentration in public health to students who are interested in advancing their careers or education. This master's program provides a general mastery of public health beyond that of the undergraduate level. The program is particularly recommended for students who wish to assume additional organizational responsibility or who wish to pursue a doctorate degree.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum requirements:

1. Hold a baccalaureate degree, including the following undergraduate courses:

- Two semesters of college-level anatomy and physiology; and
- One semester of college-level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or statistics

2. Have earned one of the following:

- a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.7 in all undergraduate coursework

- a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework

- a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in the applicant's major field of study

- a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all courses taken at the graduate level

3. Meet one of the following professional requirements:

- Baccalaureate degree in allied health professions; or

- Two years of professional work experience within the field of health care, public health, or health education/promotion, as approved by the Department of Applied Health Sciences

4. Submit a letter of interest describing academic and/or employment experience as well as reasons for pursuing the master's degree.

5. Submit a current resume (1-2 pages).

6. Provide the name, email address, and telephone number of at least two references.

The Master of Public Health Advanced provides knowledge and understanding of the efforts made by society to protect, promote and restore people's health. The goals of public health include: promotion and improvement of health; prevention of disease, premature death, disease-produced discomfort, and disability in the population.

The program comprises four core public health subjects**, four subjects from one of the following streams:

Health Promotion**
Public Health Nutrition
Occupational Health
Social Marketing for Health**

plus an additional research project (24 credit points).

Entry Requirements

Applicants normally apply to transfer into the Master of Public Health (MPH) Advanced in the final session of their MPH program.

A minimum of 24 completed credit points with a credit grade average in MPH subjects is required, together with the availability of an appropriate academic supervisor for the Major Project. Applications for transfer are considered on a case-by-case basis and academic attainment in subjects not yet completed may also be taken into consideration.

The Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine is the only award of its kind in Australia addressing both public health and tropical medicine issues.

Entry Requirements

A person may enrol for a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine if that person has:

Qualified for a Bachelor’s degree of this University in a relevant discipline as determined by the Head of the School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences;
or

Qualified at this University for the Diploma of Public Health and Tropical Medicine or the Postgraduate Diploma of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at a standard considered suitable by the Head of the School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences;
or

Obtained from this or another University a qualification approved by the faculty as equivalent to Requirement 2.1 or 2.2. Applicants may be required to undertake up to two bridging subjects as determined by the faculty;
or

Submitted as an exceptional case such other evidence of professional and academic attainments, including employment for a minimum of five years in health related activities, as meets the approval of the faculty on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences. Applicants may be required to undertake up to two bridging subjects as determined by the faculty.
