One Health is an emerging discipline that studies the complex relationships and interactions between animal health, human health and ecosystem health.

The new, re-emerging and recurring global health threats that we are facing require a long-term, more strategic approach to global health preparedness.

Underlying the problem is the growing interaction between human and animal populations driven by growth in the human population, new trends in animal production practices, changing patterns of wildlife populations, human intrusion on new ecosystems, and trans-border mobility of humans, animals, food and feed products.

Delivered through our online learning environment, our programme gives students detailed knowledge and understanding of One Health from a global perspective.

This programme is affiliated with the University's Global Health Academy.

Entry Requirements

An undergraduate degree, with an excellent or very good classification (equivalent to first or upper second class honours in the UK), in veterinary medicine, medicine, life / biological sciences, biomedical science, ecosystem health, environmental sciences, social science or economics.

The aim of the Master of Public Health (MPH) is to equip health professionals from a broad range of backgrounds to work in leadership roles in the field of public health. Students will gain an understanding the social, behavioural and cultural determinants of disease and will develop skills in the planning, evaluation, management and promotion of health programs to improve the health of populations. The program includes a strong foundation in the research disciplines of epidemiology and biostatistics which provides students with the analytical, quantitative and communication skills required of public health practitioners and researchers. The MPH has a global perspective on public and environmental health, with a particular focus on public health issues in the Asian region.

UNC-Chapel Hill's Master of Public Health in Occupational Health Nursing program will prepare you for a leadership role in occupational health nursing. The interdisciplinary, practice-based curriculum includes core public health courses, occupational health nursing core courses, occupational health nursing functional role courses, occupational health science interdisciplinary courses, and practica. The courses in the online Occupational Health Nursing program are the same courses offered by the on-campus program, but you take your courses online. In addition to your online coursework, you must participate in two, one week on-campus sessions typically held in late summer. The distance program replicates the classroom experience by using Web-based courses consisting of lectures, discussion forums, group and individual assignments, papers, and exams. Regular UNC-Chapel Hill faculty design and teach your online courses, with some adjunct faculty approved by the program. You will stay in contact with your instructors, participate in classroom activities, and complete all the same work as students studying on campus, as required and on time, but you will do it from your computer at home. The master of public health degree is usually a terminal degree, but qualified students may proceed in the School of Public Health to a DrPH or Ph.D. program. The program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. and the Council on Education for Public Health.

Our Actuarial Science programme is the only distance learning course accredited by the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries.

Actuaries are problem-solvers; business analysts; consultants and risk assessors, all rolled into one. Upon completion of the course your skills could be applied to the worlds of insurance; pensions; healthcare; banking; business management and risk assessment. You will be equipped with mathematical and statistical knowledge and problem-solving skills to help businesses and institutions evaluate the long-term financial implications of the decisions they make. By concentrating on both technical expertise and transferable skills (such as communication and problem solving) the programme prepares graduates for direct entry into the profession and a successful career.

Our courses offer a fast track route to qualifying as an actuary by providing exemptions from the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries CT1-8 examinations. Obtaining a good overall mark across your taught modules on these programmes can lead to exemptions from these examinations.

Entry Requirements

At least a 2:1 degree classification in a relevant science based degree. We expect a prerequisite knowledge of probability and calculus to an undergraduate level; this means students will typically be Mathematics, Statistics or Physics graduates. We will consider graduates from other disciplines on an individual basis and applicants may be subjected to mathematics assessment at the application stage.
