SU's Master of Health Services Management is designed for practising and aspiring managers in health services who are seeking a formal management qualification to complement their experience and/or undergraduate qualifications.

The Master of Health Services Management is appropriate for a diverse range of health professionals such as medical, paramedical, nursing, allied health and general administrative personnel. The interdisciplinary nature of the student group is a distinctive feature of the course.

The course aims to help students develop their managerial competencies by equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate efficiency, effectiveness and a high quality of service in performance at personal, department and organisational level. A high quality of conceptualisation is required to be demonstrated at Master level. It is expected, for example, that students will be able to demonstrate a capacity to evaluate the relevance of different conceptual approaches to management issues in the context of their own experience and workplace.

A distinct feature of the program, which is only delivered by distance education, is its online support including electronic assignment transmission, forums or threaded bulletin boards, direct email to Course Coordinators, and access to electronic databases and journals. The forums allow students to raise issues of concern, and ensure not only contemporary learning, but also an exchange between professionals in different healthcare systems. There are no examinations and assessment tasks are largely workplace based or situated.

Study materials includes printed packages containing course overview, study guide and selected readings. Additional electronic resources are updated frequently and often within the session of study to complement the study resources provided.

Entry Requirements

For Australian and New Zealand students there are two levels of entry for students undertaking the Master of Health Services Management:

Entry type 1

Students must hold an undergraduate degree and have at least two years' experience in the health industry. Students undertake 12 subjects (five core and seven elective subjects totalling 96 points).

Entry type 2

Students must hold an undergraduate degree and have completed or concurrently undertake a management trainee program sponsored by the Australian College of Health Service Executives (ACHSE). Students undertake eight subjects (five core and three elective subjects) in the Master program and are awarded 32 points credit for the completion of the ACHSE program following the successful completion of those eight subjects.

For Canadian students, there is one level of entry for students undertaking the Master of Health Services Management:

Entry type 1

Students must hold an undergraduate degree and have at least two years' experience in the health industry. Students undertake 12 subjects (five core and seven elective subjects totalling 96 points).

This professional doctorate aims to prepare health service professionals, senior managers, researchers and policy analysts, with a strong managerial and academic background, for advanced leadership in their professional practice.

The course coordinator, Professor Just Stoelwinder, is one of Australia's most senior and respected health care managers and management and policy academics.

You will study eight core units and three electives. You can study part-time (Multi-mode) online with Block Days (six semesters) or on-campus full time (three semesters) at The Alfred Hospital, one of Melbourne's busiest hospitals and where we have a major teaching and research presence.

The core units cover health systems law, clinical leadership and management, improving health care quality, financial issues in health care management, foundations health policy, epidemiology and biostatistics, health services reform and development and a health services management case study.

You can choose your electives from units offered in our Master of Public Health or other approved master-level management units.

Entry Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, a nationally accredited institution approved and documented by the faculty and dean of the College of Health Sciences, or an appropriately certified foreign institution.

• A 2.7 grade point average (GPA) for the bachelor’s degree used as the basis of admission, or a GPA of at least 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) for the last 60 hours of coursework (including graduate work).

• A minimum score on an Argosy University pre-approved English language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an institution at which English is the language of instruction as specified in Section Five, Admission Policies, “English Language Proficiency Policy.”
