COML Vision Statement: Prepare effective, ethical communicators who use critical thinking for positive local and global change. Study abroad and domestic immersions are available to nurture cross-cultural exploration of communication and to connect with fellow classmates. Show More Applied Organizational Studies is a degree completion program designed primarily for working adults that will provide them the qualifications needed to advance in their careers or to change professions. It provides students with education in communication, in critical analysis, and in organizational leadership. These are skills that have been repeatedly identified as highly important in comtemporary society and a shifting economy. This degree is designed for individuals who want to develop knowledge and skills that will allow them to serve and contribute to transforming the organizations of which they are a part, be it their community, church, work, nonprofit or voluntary organization, city, state. The program's design assumes that students have completed Minnesota's general education Transfer Curriculum and at least 60 credits of coursework. Entry RequirementsApplicants who are graduates of accredited high schools (or who hold a GED certificate) with no prior college work will be considered for admission to Minnesota State University.
International Applicants International applicants must provide English Language proficiency test result in one of the following ways - TOEFL paper-based test score of 500 or better; OR - TOEFL computer-based test score of 173 or better; OR
- TOEFL internet-based test score of 61 or better; OR - a score of 5.5 or better on the academic IELTS; OR - a SAT Critical Reading sub-score of 400 or higher; OR - students transferring from a U.S. college or university may satisfy the English proficiency requirement by the completion of one semester of Freshman English Composition I with a C or better grade. If the student is transferring from a school that is on the quarter system they would have to complete Freshman Composition I & II with a C or better grade; OR - successful completion of the Intensive English Language Institute program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The program serves adult students, in particular, who seek a broad, more flexible degree program to help them to advance or become more established in their careers or to improve their understanding of the world around them. The BIS is intended for a set of diverse students who bring to the university many academic, personal, and work-related experiences. They may choose the BIS program because (1) they are aware that they are more employable in many occupations with the degree, (2) that learning in the arts and sciences and in a field of specialization leads to understanding and empowerment, and (3) they review their personal plans and recognize that they can effectively meet their most important goals for a bachelor's degree through the BIS. The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Applied Professional Studies prepares graduates with core competencies necessary for successful careers in for-profit business. Combined with solid training in communication and writing skills, these competencies include basic understandings of economics, finance, statistics, decision sciences, management and marketing. Beyond these core competencies, students receive training in one of seven areas of specialization: Advertising, Allied Health Leadership, Economic Development, Financial Administration, Health Promotion, or Office Administration.
