Show More The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) program is exclusively designed for learners with at least two years of transferable credit from institutions other than UNCP, who hold either Associate in Applied Arts or Associate in Applied Science degrees. The program serves adult students, in particular, who seek a broad, more flexible degree program to help them to advance or become more established in their careers or to improve their understanding of the world around them. The BIS is intended for a set of diverse students who bring to the university many academic, personal, and work-related experiences. They may choose the BIS program because (1) they are aware that they are more employable in many occupations with the degree, (2) that learning in the arts and sciences and in a field of specialization leads to understanding and empowerment, and (3) they review their personal plans and recognize that they can effectively meet their most important goals for a bachelor's degree through the BIS. The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Applied Professional Studies prepares graduates with core competencies necessary for successful careers in for-profit business. Combined with solid training in communication and writing skills, these competencies include basic understandings of economics, finance, statistics, decision sciences, management and marketing. Beyond these core competencies, students receive training in one of seven areas of specialization: Advertising, Allied Health Leadership, Economic Development, Financial Administration, Health Promotion, or Office Administration. (Only Advertising, Economic Development, Financial Administration, and Office Administration available online). Similar to other majors within the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree program, the BIS in Applied Professional Studies is intended for those interested in obtaining a highly relevant and practical degree that provides advancement opportunities in their current employment, and for those who are starting or interested in changing their professional careers. The program of study for the BIS in Applied Professional Studies consists of five components: General Education Requirements (44 hours); Core Requirements (21 hours), Track Requirements (15 hours), 30 hours upon verification of the student holding an Applied Associate Degree, and Electives (10 hours). Our course focuses on the application of human and molecular biology to offer solutions and opportunities within the biomedical science and food professions. Our course extends and enhances your bioscience knowledge and understanding, and develops your research and innovation, and enterprise skills, which not only benefits your career advancement but also your employer. Our fully online delivery offers you flexible learning, and progression at a study pace which best suits you. Successful completion of our course also allows you to progress to higher degrees (taught and research) at universities around the world. Our course is not designed for school leavers but for those in the work place, locally and internationally, who need flexible learning. We need to be able to accredit you for your prior learning to the value of 120 credit points at level 4 and 80 to 120 credit points at level 5. This includes BSc Hons students who did not complete their degree, sub degree graduates and even higher degree graduates looking to update their biosciences. Most students enter to complete 120 credit points at level 6, over two academic years, but there are opportunities to fast track or slow track your studies. Those students entering the course via 1 or 2 bridging level 5 modules, require 1 or 2 additional semesters. The internal coherence of the educational aims of the course and its associated learning outcomes across the particular fields of applications of biology (human and molecular), within an environment which promotes research, innovation and enterprise, demand that all modules (120 credits at level 6) are compulsory. This course provides opportunities for students to:
Extend and enhance their existing knowledge and understanding of biosciences, within the context of applications in biomedical, health and food sciences. - Utilize research skills to undertake research in biosciences. - Critically evaluate advances in the biosciences and discuss the economic, social and ethical implications of developments in the biosciences and their applications. - Enhance their employability as professional Public Health, mediscience and Food industry staff, and open up progression pathways to higher degrees in biosciences. - Embrace continuing professional development and life long learning in biosciences. Entry RequirementsApplicants must: (a) satisfy the University’s general entry requirements; AND (b) satisfy specific academic subject requirements for admission as detailed below: 1. hold a Higher Diploma in Analytical Science and Biotechnology or other suitable Higher Diploma in Applied Science from the Institute of Vocational Education, Hong Kong (Chai Wan) OR 2. hold an Associate Degree in Applied Science (Life Science) from Hong Kong University, School of Professional and Continuing Education OR 3. hold a BTEC HND qualification in a Science subject which includes a major element of Applied Science or equivalent National Diploma/BSc (Ord) degree OR 4. hold other sub degree qualifications in biosciences which are judged by the course team to be equivalent to 1) to 3)OR 5. hold a Foundation Degree in a Bioscience or Life Science subject 6. successful completion of Year 1 and 2 of an appropriate full-time BSc Hons science degree OR 7. hold an appropriate science BSc Hons Degree or Higher Degree AND 8. be in employment OR c) provide evidence of their ability to undertake the programme through the accreditation of prior experiential learning
