Our Structural Engineering postgraduate programme is organised and delivered by the Faculty’s own staff, as well as practising engineers from consultancies and local authorities.

Graduate students should find the programme of substantial benefit in developing the knowledge and skills acquired in their undergraduate programme, particularly in gaining advanced capabilities in the areas of analysis and codified design in specialised aspects of structural engineering that are in demand in the industry.

For practising engineers engaged in the planning, design and construction of structural engineering works, the programme provides an opportunity to update their knowledge of current design practice and to familiarise themselves with developments in codes and methods of analysis.

You will be able to choose from a rich and varied selection of specialist structural engineering subjects.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 60 per cent in an honours degree in civil engineering accredited to CEng, or a minimum of 70 per cent in an honours degree in civil engineering accredited to IEng. Overseas equivalent qualifications are also welcome. Alternatively, at least five years’ relevant industrial experience (preferably codified design) or a professional qualification (for example, CEng).

The Department of Aerospace Engineering offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Science (thesis and non-thesis option) and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Major areas of study include fluid dynamics; structural mechanics; flight mechanics and controls; flight test engineering; and design optimization. The Raspet Flight Research Laboratory, a unique university facility for graduate aeronautical teaching and research, is operated as an integral part of the department. Other department facilities consist of: a low speed wind tunnel; a water tunnel; a blow-down supersonic wind tunnel; and a universal testing machine laboratory. Members of the faculty provide primary leadership in computational simulation and numerical grid generation.

Entry Requirements

To be admitted to the Master’s program in Aerospace Engineering, the applicant must hold an undergraduate engineering degree from a University accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), or must take the General GRE (Graduate Record Examination) test. The applicant must have maintained a minimum 3.0 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale in his/her undergraduate courses.

International students wishing to be admitted must have a minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based).

Aerospace engineering involves the analysis and design of complex multidisciplinary systems associated with aircraft, spacecraft, rockets, unpiloted aerial and space robotic platforms, and many other emerging areas within aeronautics and astronautics.

Entry Requirements

For admission as a regular graduate student, you must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited university in aerospace engineering, engineering mechanics, mechanical engineering, or a related field, such as civil structural engineering, physics or mathematics.

If you have a non-engineering degree, or an engineering degree other than aerospace, mechanical or engineering mechanics, your degree must have included the subject matter prerequisite for graduate study in aerospace engineering or engineering mechanics.

Requires TOEFL score for non-native English speakers (ODU requires a score of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, and a 79-80 on the iBT)

If you have completed an OU foundation degree or diploma of higher education in engineering (or equivalent) within the last eight years, this course enables you to top up your knowledge and skills to honours degree level. You can tailor your studies to build on your previous qualifications and experience. Flexible module choices include structural integrity, micro and nano technology, engineering design, environmental technologies, and energy and sustainability. You will also complete an individual engineering project.
