CSU's Master of Applied Science (Honours) aims to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for conduct of individual research.

The Master of Applied Science (Honours) is designed to allow graduates to undertake research aligned with their undergraduate discipline area and to support their professional development and career aspirations.

Subject to regulation and approval, candidates may conduct their research at other places where adequate facilities and associate supervisors are available. The direction of the work remains under the control of the University.

The course's key objectives are to:

develop a specialised body of knowledge appropriate to a research career

develop skills of information gathering, processing and evaluation, problem solving and communication skills.

Students complete a period of study and research and prepare a thesis.

Entry Requirements

To qualify for candidature applicants must hold one of the following:

An Honours degree, minimum Class 2 (Division 1) relevant to the biomedical sciences

A relevant four-year degree

A relevant three-year degree plus other postgraduate studies

A relevant three-year degree plus a demonstrated research ability and additional study.

The Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) provides students with advanced skills and knowledge in the collection, analysis and translation of scientific information for real world outcomes.

Students may specialise in one of the following majors while retaining some flexibility to combine units across the majors.

Marine Conservation
Aquaculture
Fisheries Management
Aquatic Animal Health

Graduates will demonstrate maximum value to employers in management and leadership roles in areas including industry and government science policy, or roles as science communicators and industry or environmental advocates.

The Masters course builds on the base skills and knowledge developed initially across 8 coursework units to expose students to independent, research-based study through which research problem-solving skills are developed. A defined research project under the supervision of one or more National Centre staff is completed across a 1 semester (or two semester - Masters with Honours J7V) duration.

Entry Requirements

Candidates for the degree will require the approval of the National Centre Director and will have obtained a Bachelors degree or equivalent qualification at another approved tertiary institution. Students with degrees in environmental management, wildlife management, environmental economics, ecological economics, environmental law, marine affairs, marine science, environmental science or related disciplines (e.g., Fisheries, Aquaculture, Marine Conservation or equivalent) from other universities will be accepted for entry.

Students will be expected to have demonstrable experience in aquatic science. Students without this experience may be required to undertake remedial study. Candidature is subject to appropriate supervision and project support being available for the Dissertation topic approved by the National Centre and subject to satisfying the prerequisites required for the chosen field of study

The Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) provides graduates with advanced skills and knowledge in the collection, analysis and translation of scientific information for real world outcomes. Specialisation options are available in one of four major streams: FISHERIES MANAGEMENT, AQUACULTURE, MARINE CONSERVATION, AQUATIC ANIMAL HEALTH. Graduates are well positioned to contribute in areas of marine resource and environmental management, science policy, and technical management across a range of marine and maritime industries.
Commencing with development of skills and knowledge via eight coursework units, this course concludes by exposing students to independent, research-based study with a two semester (or equivalent) research project. The supervised project refines students' skills and knowledge in knowledge and data integration, synthesis and critiquing skills.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for this course will have obtained an Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification at a recognised tertiary institution. Applicants with degrees in environmental management, wildlife management, marine biology, environmental science, environmental or ecological economics, environmental law or policy or related disciplines will be accepted for entry.
Alternative entry is considered on a case by case basis for applicants having demonstrable learning and experience in aquatic or marine science. Those not meeting this requirement may be required to undertake additional study to gain admission.
Enrolment in the research project unit (Dissertation) component of the degree is subject to approval by the AMC's Director of the National Centre for Marine Conservation & Resource Sustainability. Approval will be informed by availability of suitable academic supervision and other project resourcing requirements.
