This MSc is designed to receive graduates from a range of backgrounds (engineering, business, architecture, environmental and social sciences) and draw them into an understanding of the full breadth of human sustainability with energy as the core theme.

Energy systems have much wider implications than just how far we can drive or whether the lights stay on; energy is a fundamental component of our water and food resources too. This course allows you to reinforce your knowledge and understanding of sustainability within your own field of expertise, before inviting you to leave your comfort zone and engage with aspects which will be new to you.

For example, engineers may want to examine behavioural issues, environmentalists perhaps need to understand business drivers and architects need to assess how residents may interact with their structures. The course is designed in such a way that you can select modules of interest for CPD purposes, or accumulate towards an exit award, e.g. PgCert, PgDip or MSc.

You will be able to select from a broad range of modules including: Corporate social responsibility, risk, urban environment, social regeneration, economic contexts, energy security & conflict, strategy, renewable energy (issues, technologies & resources), building design & improvement, life-cycle analysis, energy systems, food, water, travel transport, environmental impact and CO2 management.

Our Master of Science in Energy Systems is an interdisciplinary program with a focus on the effective implementation of energy systems analysis and the integration of energy systems engineering technology with financial planning. The program’s core courses in engineering knowledge, business, and finance are enhanced by elective courses across the College of Engineering. This online degree program is designed primarily for engineering and technical business majors pursuing an industrial or public planning career. Applicants to the program are expected to have either an undergraduate degree from an accredited engineering school or have a quantitative business or finance degree. Applicants are expected to have adequate computer skills and college-level calculus.

The successful applicant should have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.000/4.000 or higher from an accredited U.S. school. International applicants, in addition to the minimum 3.000/4.000 requirement, should submit GRE and TOEFL scores with a minimum 151 (650) (quantitative) and 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 80 (Internet-based), respectively.

This course has been designed to provide you with an understanding of the physical, technological, economic and environmental aspects of renewable energy sources, and their present and potential future role in energy supply systems.

You will gain the skills and knowledge to assess different types of offshore renewable foundations and structures, the challenges of maintenance, decommissioning and health and safety implications of each design. You will also look at the operation and control of electrical power and energy systems as well as the control and telemetry systems to allow integrative design.

You will be able to identify and quantify appropriate sites, assess the available resource and select the correct technology for the location. You will be able to model the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic forces applied to offshore structures and select the best installation and anchorage system for the job.

The course also covers managing the health, safety and environmental impact of offshore renewables through effective risk assessment and environmental impact analysis. It will promote an understanding of the principles, fundamental concepts and strategies of project management, and of the benefits to the offshore renewables sector. It will enable you to practice and carry out essential project planning and execution processes.

This course offers advanced training in the area of renewable energy systems, sustainable energy policy or energy efficiency. It is the second year of a two-year program of study, the first year of which is the Postgraduate Diploma in Energy Studies or the Postgraduate Diploma in Energy and the Environment.

The renewable energy systems area of study is designed to provide graduates with specific training in advanced areas of renewable energy technology. The emphasis is on the design, analysis and implementation of energy systems, with particular emphasis on renewable energy systems. The renewable energy policy area of study is designed to provide graduates with training in advanced areas of renewable energy technology and policy. The emphasis is on policy analysis, market reforms and greenhouse accounting. The energy efficiency area of study, offered in conjunction with Massey University, is designed to provide graduates with training in advanced areas of energy management and energy efficiency, with particular emphasis on systems analysis and auditing and industrial and commercial technology.

The objectives of the course are:
* to provide a thorough training in the principles of sustainable energy systems;
* to introduce students to the practical aspects of renewable energy systems design, monitoring and development (renewable energy systems area of study);
* to train engineers, scientists, environmental scientists and policy analysts to participate in the development of the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries in Australia and overseas;
* to address the social, economic and environmental issues involved with sustainable energy systems.

Entry Requirements

Recognised Honours degree (AQF Level 8) or higher, or equivalent training, in Sustainable Energy Management or Renewable Energy Engineering, or Graduate Diploma in Energy Studies, or Graduate Diploma in Energy and the Environment, or satisfactory preparation through previous study or professional experience.
