Entry Requirements

A person may enrol for a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine if that person has:

Qualified for a Bachelor’s degree of this University in a relevant discipline as determined by the Head of the School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences;
or

Qualified at this University for the Diploma of Public Health and Tropical Medicine or the Postgraduate Diploma of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at a standard considered suitable by the Head of the School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences;
or

Obtained from this or another University a qualification approved by the faculty as equivalent to Requirement 2.1 or 2.2. Applicants may be required to undertake up to two bridging subjects as determined by the faculty;
or

Submitted as an exceptional case such other evidence of professional and academic attainments, including employment for a minimum of five years in health related activities, as meets the approval of the faculty on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences. Applicants may be required to undertake up to two bridging subjects as determined by the faculty.

The program is designed for location- and time-bound students who are interested in completing a B.S. degree without relocating to the UNCG campus. The Executive Doctoral Program in Health Leadership prepares mid-career professionals for senior-level positions in organizations working to improve the public's health. The three-year, cohort-based program is designed for emerging leaders or individuals taking substantial leadership responsibilities in communities, organizations and institutions, including health directors, mid-career managers in government agencies, leaders within nonprofit and non-governmental organizations, program officers and mid-level or senior managers working for foundations, and others working within the health field, including entrepreneurs and individuals working in nontraditional settings. You and your cohort will proceed together through the three-year program. You will take required coursework for the first two years. At the beginning of the third year you will take your comprehensive examination and present your dissertation topic. You will complete your dissertation during the third year. With the exception of three short visits to Chapel Hill in each of years one and two, you will complete your coursework entirely online, away from the UNC campus. Course delivery is enhanced by various interactive Internet-based learning applications including live video, audio, and data sharing. The Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), and the University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

UNC-Chapel Hill's Master of Public Health in Occupational Health Nursing program will prepare you for a leadership role in occupational health nursing. The interdisciplinary, practice-based curriculum includes core public health courses, occupational health nursing core courses, occupational health nursing functional role courses, occupational health science interdisciplinary courses, and practica. The courses in the online Occupational Health Nursing program are the same courses offered by the on-campus program, but you take your courses online. In addition to your online coursework, you must participate in two, one week on-campus sessions typically held in late summer. The distance program replicates the classroom experience by using Web-based courses consisting of lectures, discussion forums, group and individual assignments, papers, and exams. Regular UNC-Chapel Hill faculty design and teach your online courses, with some adjunct faculty approved by the program. You will stay in contact with your instructors, participate in classroom activities, and complete all the same work as students studying on campus, as required and on time, but you will do it from your computer at home. The master of public health degree is usually a terminal degree, but qualified students may proceed in the School of Public Health to a DrPH or Ph.D. program. The program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. and the Council on Education for Public Health.

The program will give you a population-based perspective derived from the core public health functions of assessment, assurance, and policy development. You will choose from one of four curriculum focus areas: public health practice; public health program development; public health nursing (for BSNs only); and field epidemiology. The courses in the online Public Health Leadership program are the same courses offered by the on-campus program, but you take your courses entirely online.
