This program is intended for those individuals who are seeking a career in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) profession as a paramedic. The EMS Paramedicine Program at Central Washington University prides itself in providing comprehensive education in paramedicine with an unparalleled depth and breadth of scope. Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements for candidacy for this program include:

Must be at least 18 years-old or older at the beginning of the course.

Evidence of a high school diploma or equivalency qualification with a 2.0 GPA or better (a GPA of 3.0 is strongly preferred).

Admission to Central Washington University
Current EMT-Basic / Intermediate certification or equivalent documentation active for one year or more required.
EMT experience with approximately 200 prehospital 911 calls with an Advanced Life Support EMS agency is preferred. It is recommended that students keep a log of their calls and include the agency name, date, nature of call and the student’s role during the call.
HOBET V exam with a composite score in the 80 - 90th percentile range. (is preferred)

Letters of recommendation from a minimum of three medical professionals (preferably paramedics) involved directly or indirectly in the delivery of prehospital medical care.

Successful completion of interview by Selection Committee of the EMS Paramedic Program at Central Washington University

For degree-seeking students, it is strongly recommended that students applying to the EMS Paramedicine Major have already completed all General Education Requirements. Otherwise, students may begin the EMS Paramedicine major before General Education requirements met, but every student must satisfy the General Education requirements in order to graduate.

International Students

To submit proof of English proficiency, international students (except those from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and English-speaking provinces of Canada) must submit one of the following:

a) IELTS score (6.0) or TOEFL score (525 for paper-based, 195 for computer-based, 71 for Internet-based)

b) A 3.0 or B grade in each of the two college-level English composition classes from a U.S. college or university.

c) Recommendation from CWU’s UESL program.

The program will provide students a strong foundation of knowledge regarding the various public safety entities including: law enforcement, corrections, the courts, fire science, homeland security and emergency response. As students advance through the program, they develop critical thinking skills and expand their abilities to collaborate effectively in high-risk situations. The Public Safety department is made up of faculty who specialize in public safety, homeland security, fire science, corrections, sociology, public administration, psychology, law, and social science. Our program offers personal attention to every student through small class sizes and individualized advisement.

Graduates from an online public safety administration bachelor’s degree program can find leadership positions in the fire protection, law enforcement, corrections and emergency medical services industries.

Some find employment in emergency management, a growing field due to what many consider the heightened threat of terrorism and natural disasters. Employment for emergency management directors is expected to grow 13% by 2020, about as fast as the national average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Public Safety Leadership plus 2 degree completion program is fully online and designed to allow students who have completed 60 or more hours of undergraduate coursework to earn a Bachelor of Science in Public Safety Leadership from Mercer University in as little as two years. This program is designed for students who have an associate degree in criminal justice, emergency management services, paralegal studies, fire science, paramedicine or related field. Through special agreements, up to 64 hours of credit may be transferred to the Mercer University program.

Candidates generally must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5. (on a 4.0 scale) and must be in good standing at all regionally accredited colleges or universities attended.

This course is designed to broaden your employment opportunities by allowing you to tailor your degree for your specific purpose. You can complete a combination of public health and optional units in the health sciences major, or specialise in health information management or paramedicine.

If you complete the health sciences major you will be awarded a Bachelor of Science (Health Sciences) degree. If you complete the health information management major you will be awarded a Bachelor of Science (Health Information Management) degree. If you complete the paramedicine major you will be awarded the Bachelor of Science (Paramedicine) degree.

The major is selected in year one, and completed over the duration of the course.

Health sciences major

This major offers many options, allowing you to follow studies within public health, or as a preparation for undergraduate an postgraduate programs in various health professions.

Professional practice placements may also be available to help reinforce your learning and to provide interprofessional fieldwork opportunities.

Health information management major

Health information is pivotal to clinical care, and is used as a base for healthcare planning management and legal decisions, clinical research and epidemiology, and for evaluating the standards and quality of healthcare, it is for this reason health information managers need to have strong clinical understanding in addition to extensive training in information technology and systems, data and database management and staff management.

You will experience processional practice throughout the course by undertaking project work and visiting health facilities, including community health centres and a variety of public and private hospitals.

The employment roles available for health information management graduates are varied with workforce shortages in a number of areas, the skills and knowledge acquired as part of the major can be applied anywhere in Australia and international, both in and outside the health sector.

Curtin is the only university to offer an undergraduate and graduate entry master degree in health information management in Western Australia and the only health information management degree available by distance education in Australia.

We also offer a Master of Health Information Management degree.

Paramedicine major

Paramedics are on the front line of medical care. They respond to emergency calls from the public and provide pre-hospital treatment, often in high-pressure environments and circumstances. It is a challenging career where life-changing decisions are made on a regular basis.

This major addresses the changing healthcare environment, with an interprofessional health education focus and specialised fieldwork experience.

Clinical laboratories will be delivered in collaboration with the St John Ambulance WA College of Pre-Hospital Care. To be eligible to complete the program you must maintain employment with St John Ambulance WA as a student ambulance officer.

This course is the only program to offer a collaborative clinical engagement with St John Ambulance WA for new students from 2013, to help you to become industry-ready.

Paramedicine is a growing field of healthcare focusing on the pre-hospital sector of healthcare delivery. Future developments include greater community-based care initiatives.
