The Department of Apparel, Design and Hospitality Management offers graduate study leading to the Master of Science degree or a Graduate Certificate in Merchandising in collaboration with the Great Plains Distance Education Alliance (GP-IDEA). The Master’s degree in Merchandising is on online program offered through Distance and Continuing Education at NDSU. Participating faculty members from the GP-IDEA have jointly developed the merchandising curriculum. Course are taught by faculty within the Alliance from Kansas State University, North Dakota State University, Oklahoma State University, South Dakota State University, and the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.

The Master’s Degree in Merchandising is designed for professionals in a variety of merchandising fields. This program provides students with a global perspective of the interaction of cultural, economic, political, social, and environmental systems as they relate to the industry. In the ever- changing global environment, the ability to merchandise products to the consumer is a strategic advantage, and will distinguish graduates of this program from their peers in the industry. The fully online program allows students to complete coursework while maintaining their professional lives.

Entry Requirements

A cumulative baccalaureate GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale, a GPA of at least 3.25 during the final 30 semester credits of graded undergraduate course work, or a minimum GPA of 3.0 on 10 semester credits of graduate course work.

ISU offers a distance (hybrid) Ph.D. in Apparel, Merchandising, and Design for working professionals. In the distance Doctor of Philosophy program, award-winning ISU faculty prepare you to succeed as a professional in industry, museums, or academia.

This hybrid distance program features one or two short on-campus summer coursework sessions (that help meet the residency requirement). Other credits can be done at a distance.

Entry Requirements

Students must have earned a master’s degree to be accepted into our Ph.D. program. For doctoral students a master’s degree with thesis is recommended. For those who have not completed a thesis, the program requires that a research project resulting in a potentially publishable document be completed before the preliminary exams of a Ph.D. program.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test scores are required of doctoral degree applicants.

International students must have an overall Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 (paper test) or 213 (computer test) or 79 on the internet-based test or above with a minimum listening sub-score of 50. Graduate assistants must score at least 600 on the paper test, 250 on the computer test, and 100 on the internet-based test.

Choose a capstone from one of these options. 1) The practicum option involves a work experience in line with your degree and includes training, mentoring and networking opportunities. 2) The research project option requires independent study on a topic of your choice and a final design paper; you will benefit from regular contact with a faculty adviser who will offer guidance in and critique of your work. 3) The thesis option concludes with an overarching research project and requires a presentation to your thesis committee.
