Medical informatics is the intersection of information science, computer science, and health care. The Master of Science in Medical Informatics is designed to:

- the recipient of a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution;

- adequately prepared for advanced study in the chosen field of specialization, as demonstrated by the previous program of study and the scholastic record; and

- recommended for admission by the head of the program or concentration

- Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale

- Students with at least 5 years of work experience in health care or health IT

But the systems don’t run themselves. Ensuring that health care systems deliver timely and accurate information, in the correct format, while meeting regulatory requirements, these complex technologies are increasing educational demands on the individuals assigned to develop, implement, and maintain this data. Regis University’s Master of Science in Health Care Informatics and Information Management (MS-HIIM) program is designed to meet these growing educational demands.

The MS-HIIM program is designed for current health care professionals looking to expand their knowledge of systems implementation, work flow design, systems planning, security management, and electronic health information management. Beyond IT, the program also includes curriculum focused on project management, leadership development, ethics, and managing digital information, all taught from the health care perspective. Two graduate level prerequisites exist for individuals without health care experience.

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA - ELIGIBILITY

A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

Minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale or a satisfactory score on the
Graduate Records Exam (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). (Note: Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 will be considered on an individual basis by the Division of Health Services Administration.)

Two or three years of management experience in a health industry setting with exposure to health care systems is strongly recommended.

If English is not your native/first language, you must meet the following language proficiency requirement:

- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) – Internet-based: Minimum score of 82 (24 Writing, 20 Speaking, 22 Reading, 16 Listening) on the TOEFL.

Health Informatics is the multidisciplinary scientific field concerned with the acquisition, storage, retrieval, communication, and optimal use of health information for problem solving and decision-making. Health Informatics has as its driving goals the improvement of health and healthcare, and the advancement of the biomedical and health sciences. The Health Informatics course will enable participants to enhance their professional skills with applications of emergent technologies in the health workplace. The course focuses on the principles governing the management of health information and health knowledge, and considers these principles in relation to the roles of patients and of the different professions involved in delivering healthcare (clinical, technical and managerial).

Entry Requirements

Applicants will normally: possess an honours degree of class (2:1) or above (awarded by a United Kingdom university) or equivalent; have a minimum of one year working professional experience in a public health role, community, government setting, or similar. Most students are already working full-time in a related area. For those with a professional qualification, Accreditation of Prior Achievement (APA) will be considered.
Students whose first language is not English require either:

IELTS level 7.0 overall with level 7.0 in reading and writing specifically

or

TOEFL 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) or minimum of 100 (Internet-based test)

or

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English Grade B
