The master instructional specialist program, International Reading Association standards, is intended for the teaching practitioner in settings from early childhood through adolescence and young adulthood. The candidate will learn to deal more effectively with diverse candidate
learners and move from theory to best practice in the field. The Reading Specialist PK-12 serves practicing teachers, elementary or secondary, who wish to acquire initial reading specialist licensure with a master’s degree in Kansas.

The master teacher program is intended for the teaching practitioner in settings from early childhood through adolescence and young adulthood. A candidate for this program is typically an educator that intends to remain in a general education classroom. The candidate will learn to
deal more effectively with diverse student learners and move from theory to best practice in the field. The Elementary Content is designed for educators who wish to improve their teaching, management, and assessment skills.

Each candidate must complete the six starred (*) introductory and research courses within the first 15-21 hours before taking the other required courses in the program. A Core Knowledge Examination over those courses will be given. A Core Knowledge Examination over these courses should be taken during the semester following the completion of the 15 core credits. When the introductory core courses are completed, the Core Knowledge Examination is passed, and admission requirements are fulfilled, the candidate will be removed from probation and allowed to enroll in the remaining coursework.

The goal of the Master of Arts in Education (MAED) program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for ethical and effective leadership careers in the field of education, staff development, and training. The regionally accredited online Masters of Education program promotes educational opportunities for career advancement, employment mobility and lifelong learning. The online Masters degree is designed to provide both a broad based perspective of adult education and training, as well as, an increased competence in fulfilling related responsibilities in educational institutions, nonprofits, and corporate organizations. .

As individual state requirements vary, the Master of Arts in Education degree is not a teacher licensure or certification program, nor does it provide administrative credentialing. Students are urged to contact their respective states for specific requirements beyond the graduate degree.

Mississippi State University’s Department of Curriculum, Instruction, & Special Education and Center for distance Education have collaborated to offer a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with either an Early Childhood or a Middle School concentration through distance learning. We would like to welcome you to take a glance into the program where all the courses are ONLINE. You can start the teacher education program in the fall or spring semester. If you have core classes to take, you can start those in the summer.

Entry Requirements

Teacher Education programs generally have the following admission requirements:

- Minimum 2.75 GPA on 44 hours of coursework (including the 36-hour core)

- Cumulative GPA of 2.5

- Grades of C or higher in English Composition I and II and in your college Algebra, Quantitative Reasoning, or other higher level math course

- An SAT score of 860, OR and ACT composite score of 21 (with no subset below 18) OR the following Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators scores: Reading — 156, Writing — 162, and Math — 150

- Verification of 40 hours of work with children/youth

- Two recommendations from educators

- Completion of a Licensure Advisory Form and a Dispositions Advisory Form

- Submission to a Criminal Background check
